Belleville cemetery part of remembrance
BELLEVILLE — More than two million volunteers across the country will once again remember the fallen, honor those who served and teach the next generation about the value of freedom during the National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 13.
The Machpelah Presbyterian Cemetery, located at 3820 W. Main St. in Belleville, is one of the few locations in the Juniata River Valley to take part in this remembrance. The ceremony is slated to take place at noon, with wreath placement immediately to follow.
According to the National Wreaths Across America Day website, a total of 95 wreaths have been sponsored.
“All the wreaths have been sponsored, which is awesome,” said Wreaths Across America volunteer Cheryl Gearhart Swineford, who is leading the Belleville project this year after focusing her efforts in Reedsville previously.
Swineford and others laid wreaths on graves at five cemeteries over the last six years, including the Church Hill Cemetery in
Reedsville in 2024.
“Remember and honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes and the act of saying the name of each and every veteran aloud,” the organization said in a press release.
The window to sponsor grave-specific wreaths at the Belleville ceremony or elsewhere has ended, the website said. There are other opportunities to recognize veterans who are still living or who have passed.
“It is a small cemetery behind the Presbyterian church,” Swineford added of the Machpelah Presbyterian Cemetery. “The preacher at this church is also the preacher at the Church Hill United Methodist in Reedsville. She requested that we do this cemetery after we finished the one in Reedsville last year.”
Organization officials said that more than 700 new locations will take part on National Wreaths Across America Day this year.
Orbisonia Cemetery, in Orbisonia, Huntingdon County, is also participating in this year’s ceremony, with 243 wreaths sponsored.
