‘Surviving the Holidays’ GriefShare on Nov. 22
BELLEVILLE — The Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons are usually times of joyous celebration. For those who have lost loved ones, however, the seasons can be times of depression and sadness.
For those dealing with loss, Allensville Mennonite Church will host a special GriefShare on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 to 11 a.m. The one-time, “Surviving the Holidays” GriefShare is geared to help navigate the Holiday season for those who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. There will be a video, workbook and discussion time.
GriefShare facilitators Zach Knepp, Pastor Bob Zook and his wife, Ethel, along with Steve and Monica Berger, work as a team to help those who are hurting in difficult times.
“We’re excited to host a GriefShare “Surviving the Holidays” seminar,” Knepp said. “This free, two-hour seminar is designed specifically for anyone in our community navigating the Holidays after losing a loved one, whether it’s a spouse, parent, child or friend.”
The GriefShare will offer practical tools to help those in need find healing.
“The Holidays are meant to be joyful, but for those grieving, they can feel isolating and overwhelming,” Knepp said. “Empty chairs at the table, forced smiles or just the weight of ‘firsts’ without your loved one. Studies show grief intensifies during this time, but so many people suffer in silence. That’s why we’re hosting this now. To remind our neighbors they’re not alone and equip them with simple strategies to navigate it healthily.”
GriefShare provides a safe space to share, learn and grow with others who understand loss, and helps deal with the emotional challenges many face at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“This is for anyone in Mifflin County who’s experienced loss in their life,” Knepp said. “There’s no ‘right’ timeline for grief. You don’t need to be a church member. It’s welcoming to all walks of life. We’ve seen it draw people who might never step into a church otherwise, and past attendees say it helped them rediscover joy amid the pain. Attendees can connect with others who truly understand. Everyone gets a take-home Holiday survival guide packed with encouragement for the season ahead. It’s not about ‘fixing’ grief, it’s about validating those feelings and providing hope.”
Though the Nov. 22 GriefShare is a one-time event, the church offers similar programs at other times.
“If you or someone you know could use a compassionate ear this season, join us. It’s a small step that can make a big difference. We also run a full 13-week GriefShare group twice a year. so this is a great intro. Reach out anytime. Our community is here to support you.”
The “Surviving the Holidays” GriefShare is free, but organizers prefer those attending to RSVP by calling or texting (717) 437-6821. You are also encouraged to reach out if you have any questions.
Allensville Mennonite Church is located at 1156 Rte. 655, Belleville.
