‘Freaky Friday’ sequel delivers comedy, not quality

The streaming platform Disney+ released a sequel to the 2003 classic “Freaky Friday,” starring Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as Anna’s mother Tess on Nov. 12.
Several actors, including Chad Michael Murray as Jake Austin and Mark Harmon as Ryan, reprised their roles in the second film, “Freakier Friday.”
Anna’s bandmates from “Freaky Friday” also make an appearance in the 2025 sequel.
In “Freaky Friday,” Tess and Anna can’t seem to get along.
Anna feels like her mother just doesn’t understand her and wouldn’t last a second in her shoes.
Tess feels like being a teenager again would be much easier than being an adult with real-life problems.
While at dinner, a restaurant owner casts a spell on Anna and her mother, causing them to switch bodies so they can understand each other.
Tess quickly learns that school and teens are not what they once were.
Tess also discovers that a teacher at Anna’s school gave her bad grades because Tess turned him down in high school.
Anna finds that her mom’s life isn’t as easy as she thought, and she needs her mom more than she knew.
Keeping with that theme, “Freakier Friday” explores misunderstandings between a mother and her teenage daughter when adult Anna and her daughter, Harper, played by Julia Butters, switch bodies.
Tess, Harper’s grandmother, also swaps bodies with a new face in the family.
Despite the chaos of switching bodies with her daughter, Anna prepares to marry a single dad with a teenage daughter of his own.
Neither Harper nor Lily, played by Sophia Hammons, is on board with the marriage. The pair also do not see eye to eye.
However, they feel determined to break up their parents before the big day as they are trapped in the bodies of their mother and possible step-grandmother.
But bonding over body swapping confusion may strengthen the whole family’s bond. Despite the revamped storyline, sequels or remakes tend not to offer the same nostalgic feel as the original.
“Freakier Friday” also had many scenes focused on the teenagers and was too corny for adults to enjoy.
However, Lohan and Curtis, along with the other returning actors, made the film worth watching on its own.
“Freakier Friday” doesn’t entirely deserve a bad rating.
Although the cheesy scenes made the film difficult to watch at times, “Freakier Friday” was still enjoyable because it wasn’t solely aimed at a younger audience.
Curtis and Lohan also carried the film with a healthy dose of comedy.
While “Freakier Friday” was funnier than the original film, it was not the best of the two.
The two films are still the perfect options for girls’ movie night this weekend.
Running time: 1 hour, 51 minutes
Rating: PG
