A ride on the rails: New train ride in Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG — If you like Civil War tourism and train rides then Gettysburg is the place to be.

There is a new train ride in Gettysburg that just opened this year. The train ride is a 90-minute roundtrip ride and takes 90 minutes through the Adams County countryside.

To ride the train, you must make a reservation. The train is scheduled to run through November and into December. The phone number for reservations is (717) 573-7888.

The train only runs on weekends. Times include Friday at 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 and $27 for senior citizens.

There may be some confusion when arriving in Gettysburg. There are two train stations located on North Washington Street.

The older station is where President Abraham Lincoln arrived to deliver the Gettysburg address on Nov. 18, 1863. That station has a small museum about the history of the station.

There was a “Virtual Reality Experience” exhibit in the station, which has since been moved to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. The visitor center also includes a movie about the Civil War and the battle of Gettysburg and also the Cyclorama Painting.

The “Virtual Reality Experience” is about three people, who were at the battle in 1863. They are Cornelia Hancock, a hospital caregiver; Eli Blanchard, a young soldier, musician and caregiver and Basil Biggs, a Gettysburg resident and helper

of the wounded.

You get to pick what one of these three people you want to follow. The exhibit was at the station because it became the army’s first field hospital on July 1, 1863 the first day of the battle.

The cost is around $10 for the ‘VIrtutal Reality Experience” and I can tell you it’s worth the price. I took part in the exhibit, while it was at the station.

The cost for the movie, cyclorama and museum is $21 and $20 for senior citizens.

Starting at $2.99/week.
