Six horror classics to keep you up at night

Check out these six horror throwbacks to give you the creeps this Halloween.

‘Sleepaway Camp’ (1983)

This is an American horror slasher classic starring Mike Kellin, Katherine Kamhi, and Paul DeAngelo alongside Jonathan Tiersten, Felissa Rose, Christopher Collet, and Karen Fields. “Sleepaway Camp” is similar to classics like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” The film grossed only $11 million at the box office and received mixed reviews. “Sleepaway Camp” is available on a free streaming app called Tubi, making it the perfect cult classic to get you in the mood for Halloween.

‘Waxworth’ (1998)

This American horror comedy is inspired by the 1924 German silent film “Waxworks.” The 1998 film is about a group of college students who receive an invite to a museum. When they arrive, they realize each exhibit is a bit off-putting. Unintentionally, each student finds themselves sucked into parallel dimensions with the monsters from those exhibits. One of the students later discovers that the museum owner collected trinkets from 18 of the most evil people who ever lived. The owner sold his soul to the Devil and wants to bring the previous museum owners back from the dead by creating 18 wax figures and feeding them the souls of victims. This act would bring about the end of the world. Watch this movie for free on the Tubi app.

‘Bone Collector’ (1999)

This American crime thriller stars Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, and Queen Latifah. Washington plays a bedridden homicide detective who injured himself during a previous criminal investigation. He then guides a new patrol officer, Jolie, to uncover the identity of a serial killer. The killer first abducts a couple, burying a male in an old railroad tunnel, where the officer comes across clues to find the female. Washington and Jolie’s characters do not decipher the clues fast enough, and the female was also found dead. With each passing murder, the case becomes more and more intense, eventually leading the killer right to the detective and the officer. This film is also available to stream for free on the Tubi app.

‘Cry Wolf’ (2005)

The film is an American slasher available on Amazon Prime Video. “Cry Wolf” stars Julian Morris, Jon Bon Jovi, Lindy Booth, Jared Padalecki, and Gary Cole. It follows a group of teenagers at a remote elite boarding school who play a game called Cry Wolf. This game leads to the discovery of a young woman’s body on campus, putting the lives of those who played the game in danger. The film earned $32.5 million worldwide from a $1 million budget, despite receiving negative reviews from critics.

‘You’re Next’ (2011)

The American slasher film stars Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, A.J. Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Barbara Crampton, and Rob Moran. In the film, a group of masked individuals prey on and attack an estranged family during a family reunion. This film was produced on a low budget of $1 million, but it grossed more than $26 million while gaining a cult following. The story is filled with twists and turns and horrific killings and is not for those with a weak stomach. “You’re Next” is available on Tubi for free.

‘Rose Red’ (2002)

Author Stephen King wrote the script for this mini-series, which stars Kimberly Brown of “Halloweentown” fame. Brown shows her darker side in this horror series when she acts as a child psychic alongside actress Nancy Travis, who acts as the professor known as Joyce Reardon. The story is set in a haunted mansion in Seattle where several people have either disappeared or died. This morbid history piqued the interest of university psychology professor Reardon, who leads a team of psychics to explore the mansion. Her team attempts to record data that would constitute scientific proof of paranormal activity. The team awakens the evil spirit possessing the house, leading to several deaths. “Rose Red” is available on Hulu.
