School board accepts $3K donation for Nurse’s Pantry

MIFFLINTOWN — School administrators say the lack of the basic necessities, such as attire, hygiene items, footwear and outerwear, is one of the main reasons for students’ chronic absenteeism.

That’s where the Nurse’s Pantry, a community initiative of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, steps in.

Funded as an in-school resource for clothing, toiletries and other wellness products, the Nurse’s Pantry provides a vital resource to help elementary students in Juniata and Mifflin counties succeed in school and in life.

The Nurse’s Pantry is introduced to students by the school nurse, principal or guidance counselor. In addition to attire, The Nurse’s Pantry also provides undergarments and lice treatment kits to those students who need these basic necessities to attend school.

The Juniata County School District Board of Directors approved a $3,360 donation from the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata for the district’s Nurse’s Pantry at its monthly meeting at the administration building in Mifflintown on Thursday night.

“We are very appreciative of the funds that the United Way provides to Juniata County School District through The Nurse’s Pantry program,” said Kim Stuck, certified school nurse for the Juniata County School District, prior to Thursday night’s meeting. “The funds help us to purchase personal care items like clothing, underwear, hygiene items, and shoes. We also provide lice treatment kits to students who are in need of this service.

“Many of these items are used heavily because approximately 50 percent of our students in the school district are economically disadvantaged,” Stuck added. ” By having these items available for students, we are able to meet their needs at school and keep them in their classes to help them succeed.”
