Record breaking Broadway show ‘Hamilton’ comes to theaters
2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the hit Broadway show “Hamilton.” This weekend, the musical will be shown in theaters for the first time on Sept. 5.
Theaters are expected to be packed with “Hamilton” fans this weekend as they enjoy the cozy movie theater feel while watching their favorite musical.
Starting on Friday, there are “Hamilton” show times at AMC Altoona 12 at 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 7:15 p.m., and 9 p.m.
“Hamilton” was created and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote other Broadway plays, including “In the Heights,” and worked as a co-composer and writer for “Bring It On: The Musical.” Writing Broadway shows is not his only talent; he also writes songs for popular movies, including “Moana,” “Encanto,” and “Vivo.”
“Hamilton” originated as a Broadway play that tells the life of the American founding father Alexander Hamilton. The two-hour and 45-minute musical shows viewers Alexander Hamilton’s life as he begins his journey from an immigrant orphan to George Washington’s right-hand man. This musical also details Hamilton’s marriage and affair in addition to his feud with Arron Burr, resulting in a duel and Hamilton’s death.
The original cast starred Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Arron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Christopher Jackson as George Washington. This cast performed together 823 times on Broadway before parting ways.
Since its debut, “Hamilton” has been performed all over the world. The musical also gained a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, won 11 Tony Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.
All in all, “Hamilton” has been extremely successful since its initial release in 2015. Due to the high demand from fans, it was decided in 2020 that the show would be put in theaters.
However, due to the pandemic, the plan did not come to fruition. The show was filmed and released on Disney + instead of debuting in theaters.
This musical had 2.7 million household streams in the first week alone, and 22 million within the first month of release.
Due to “Hamilton’s” continued success, Lin-Manuel Miranda made its 10th anniversary a major celebration.
Most of the original cast reunited at the Tony Awards, performing a rendition of some of the most popular tracks.
Lin-Manuel Miranda also held a fan contest, where fans could submit artistic ideas for the cover of the special 10th anniversary playbill.
