Historical Society dinner features storyteller

MEXICO, Pa. — Juniata County Historical Society’s fall dinner meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Walker Grange, Mexico. Speaker for the event will be Jeffrey R. Frazier.

Frazier holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State and an MBA from Rider University. Sunbury Press is publishing his five-volume series titled, “Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks,” and also has published the entire eight volumes of his Pennsylvania Fireside Tales series. Frazier will speak on many of the fireside tales that pertain to the Juniata River Valley area.

A roast beef dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with a short business meeting followed by the speaker. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased at Juniata County Historical Society Archives, 498 Jefferson St., Suite B, Mifflintown, PA 17059 (lower level in county library) any Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a check for ticket(s) to be mailed. Deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 14.

National hunting and fishing day this Saturday

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will join with other fish and wildlife conservation agencies across the country to recognize National Hunting and Fishing Day Saturday, Sept. 27.

To commemorate National Hunting and Fishing Day, the public is invited to participate in several upcoming, free events. Please note that some of these events require pre-registration with a limited number of participants:

• Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., McConnells Mill State Park, Lawrence County: During the McConnells Mill Heritage Festival, PFBC education staff will host a fishing rod casting demonstration and learning station. Registration is not required.

• Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitors Center, Lancaster and Lebanon counties: This free, family-friendly event will feature hands-on demonstrations and dozens of vendors with hunting, fishing, and conservation activities. Registration is not required.

• Sept. 28, noon to 4 p.m, Bald Eagle State Park, Centre County: Participants can build fish habitat structures for the lake, test their archery skills with an archery course (ages 12+), and build and take home a Blue Bird nesting box. • Sept. 28, 3 to 6 p.m., Marshall Lake at North Park, Allegheny County: This Family Fishing Program is for families with little or no fishing experience to learn basic fishing skills. Register for this event in advance at https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/233485.

To purchase a Pennsylvania hunting or fishing license, customers can visit either the PGC or PFBC websites to connect to the HuntFishPA online portal or visit more than 700 retail license issuing agents.

Hunters and anglers are reminded to keep safety in mind this fall by wearing safety harnesses and life jackets.
