Apples, anniversaries among the weekend activities

From apple festivals to anniversaries and dogs barking in the park to runners booking it for five kilometers, there are plenty of activities on tap this weekend for you and family and friends to find something to do.

Here’s a glance at what’s scheduled:

Fairs and festivals

• Family Harvest Fest and Car Show, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Paintersville C&MA Church, 3195 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown. There will be food and drinks, petting zoo, barrel train rides, obstacle course, games, deejay, emergency apparatus display, conservation district and Greenwood Furnace State Park educator, hit-n-miss engine displays and more. Car show details include $15 entry fee, Top 25: 1989-0lder and 1990-present, first 100 entries receive dash plaques and prizes including participant’s choice, kid’s choice, church’s choice and specialty awards. • Apple Fest, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Bender Park, Reedsville. Food trucks, food and craft vendors, along with music, contests and activities.

Benefits galore

• Bookin’ It 5K Run/Walk, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, race beginning in front of the Heister House, 1451 William Penn Highway, Mifflintown, and follow old Route 22 to the Old Canal House and loop back to Heister House. Sponsored by the Juniata Valley Bank, the event features a 5k run and walk, welcoming participants of all ages and fitness levels. This community-focused event is raising funds to enhance library resources and programs that serve Juniata County. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the 5k starting at 9 a.m. Awards will be handed out immediately after the race.

Third Annual Bark in the Park, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Walker Township Park, Mifflintown. Expect vendors, food, puppy pizza party, pet photos, nail trims, Chinese auction, deejay on site, paw print station, visit from Weavdog and pet fashion show from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit Rescue Our Furry Friends Rescue.

Rodeo Night at First Baptist Church, 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, 23964 Route 35 North, Mifflintown. There will be a mechanical bull, bounce house, games, food and fun for all ages. Dust off your boots and round up your friends for this event, which will be held rain or shine. Must be 48 inches tall for the mechanical bull and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a parent.

Glow in the Dark Party, 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Heritage Volunteer Fire Co., 218 S. Main St., Lewistown. This dance is open to ages 13 to 17. There will be snacks and drinks and lots of fun. Bring your friends and dance the night away! Tickets cost $5 per person.

Free Museum Day

Free Museum Day is back on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various museums across Mifflin and Huntingdon counties. They will be open and available to tour for free. Locations include: Old Hoopes School, Kishacoquillas Valley Historical Society, Newton-Wayne Historical Society Lockhouse and McVeytown Museum in Mifflin County; and Swigart Museum, East Broad Top Railroad, Mount Union Area Historical Society and Rockhill Trolley Museum in Huntingdon.

Fayette Fire Co. 100th anniversary celebration

The Fayette Fire Co. in McAlisterville is celebrating its 100th year, starting Friday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday, come on out to play bingo, starting at 7 p.m. On Saturday, check out the various vendors with delicious food, special church dedication for the fire hall and kids’ activities like a bounce house, face painting, duck races and pony cart rides. A parade will step off at 1 p.m. Square Dancing follows from 3 to 5 p.m., with a special church dedication and service for the fire hall to follow at 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday, a turkey and ham loaf dinner will be served at the fire company from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until the food runs out. This meal will be served buffet-style and costs $19 per person. Reservations are preferred but not required.
