Splish, splash with variety of water creatures this weekend

Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon will welcome visitors to its Blacksmith Shop.

Ever wonder what sorts of creatures live in the small waterways around you? Now is your chance to find out.

Whipple Dam State Park, located on Laurel Run Road in Petersburg, will hold a Stream Stomp on Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Join park staff to investigate the stream that flows into Whipple Lake. A limited number of nets will be provided. Meet at the Boat Rental for a short walk down the trail to the stream site.

The Stream Stop at Whipple Dam is just one of the things to do this weekend. Most of the events are taking place outdoors. Here’s what else is happening in the Juniata River Valley:

Salamander Safari at Whipple Dam

Colin Alvarez will appear at Brookmere Winery and Vineyard Inn in Belleville on Sunday.

A Salamander Safari will be held at Whipple Dam State Park in Petersburg at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Learn about salamanders that are native to Pennsylvania; where they live, what they eat, what makes them so unique and where to find them. Head to the Whipple Lake Trail to catch and identify salamanders and newts. Meet at the boat rental.

Blacksmith Shop Open at Greenwood Furnace

The Blacksmith Shop will be open at Greenwood Furnace State Park at Greenwood Road in Huntingdon on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Explore the past with park staff. Learn about the village, built around an inferno through displays on Greenwood Furnace and ironmaking.

World War II exhibit at Beavertown

Historical Society Museum

The Beavertown Historical Society Museum, located in the Beavertown Borough Building at 111 W. Walnut St. in Beavertown, will feature Ted Herman’s World War II exhibit, showcasing military uniforms and additional wartime artifacts from other sources. The exhibit will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday. This will be the last time to see the military featured display. The book “Beavertown’s Snapshots in Time” will also be available at the museum for a donation of $45. To reserve a copy or for more information, contact Karen Burns at (570) 658-7385.
