PennDOT announces continued road work
MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata County residents can expect to see the following maintenance activities, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation:
Bridge maintenance and cleaning
• Route 22 at a pair of bridges spanning Doe Run and Route 2003 (Doe Run Road) in Walker Township Monday. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures on Route 22, as well as on Route 2003 while this work is completed;
• Route 22 at a pair of bridges spanning Locust Run and Route 2007 (Locust Run Road) two miles West of Thompsontown in Walker Township. Tuesday;
• Route 22 at a pair of bridges spanning Delaware Creek and Route 333 in Delaware Township on the Thompsontown Borough line Wednesday;
• Route 850 at a bridge spanning Tuscarora Creek in Tuscarora Township, one mile north of the Village of Honey Grove Thursday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours;
• Route 3002 (Old 22 Road) at a bridge spanning Lost Creek in Fermanagh Township. Thursday;
• Route 3021 (Memminger Hill Road) at a bridge spanning Tuscarora Creek in Tuscarora Township, one mile southeast of McCoysville Friday.
• Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.
Mechanized patching
• Route 235 between Route 2017 (Dimmsville Road) in Greenwood Township and Black Dog Valley Road in Delaware Township Friday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Mechanized patching is used to patch limited roadway areas that have extensive potholes, large areas of cracked pavement, and depressions. If mechanized patching was not performed, the damaged road surface would further deteriorate, resulting in PennDOT needing to completely rebuild the road or perform more costly corrective measures.
Pipe Replacement and Cleaning
• Route 333 between Route 35 in Milford Township and the Port Royal Borough line Monday through Friday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.
Shoulder maintenance
• Route 1002 (Cuba Mills Road) between Route 35 and Billyville Road in Fayette Township. Monday, August 18. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 2007 (Locust Run Road/Free Spring Church Road) between Long Run Road and Route 35 in Fayette Township. Tuesday, August 19, through Thursday, August 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway, and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.
This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.
Customers can report road concerns by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD. If calling after hours, please leave a name and phone number.
