The Sentinel is moving to a new location

LEWISTOWN — It’s been said, “There is nothing permanent other than change.” With that in mind, The Sentinel will be changing addresses later this fall but what won’t change is our commitment to providing local news.
The Sentinel is moving from Highland Park to 21 S. Brown St., Lewistown. It began operating at its current location in February of 1972, a new facility at that time.
The Sentinel traces its origin as a daily paper back to Oct. 10, 1903, but its roots go back still further. On Oct. 11, 1832 the first issue of the Lewistown Republican appeared on the streets. It continued under the same name until 1845, when it was changed to the True Democrat.
Henry Fosnot came to town in 1879 and purchased The True Democrat and another weekly, the Democratic Sentinel. He consolidated the two into the Democrat and Sentinel. In 1899, it became a semi-weekly publication. In 1903, Fosnot founded the Daily Sentinel.
The Sentinel began operating from its Dorcas Street location in 1910 and continued operating there until February of 1972. The operation was then moved to a new, modern building in Highland Park. The building has undergone two major renovations, in 1990 and in 2003.
The property in Highland Park has served the Sentinel well since 1972. At one point, it held over 120 employees with a nearly 24-hour production cycle-printing many commercial publications. Since consolidating all printing into another location, we are only utilizing a fraction of the space. We are downsizing to a building that more aptly meets our current needs. The Highland Park property will be available for sale to be redeveloped to serve the community.
The move is being planned for October of 2025.
Our location is changing, but we will still be here, in the heart of the community, “Keeping an Eye on the Juniata Valley” — our motto — as a print and digital media company. We can still be reached at the same phone number (717) 248-6741.
We are proud of our past and we are looking forward to a fresh start in a new location.
