Local secures old Central Hotel property
LEWISTOWN — The Lewistown Borough Council Monday chose a bid for a property opening in addition to discussing other business including finalizing the payment for the new Heritage Fire Co. fire truck.
Borough Manager Tyler Fink began his report by announcing bids for the opening of the old Central Hotel property across from Gus’s Pizza.
Fink said Zane Swanger of Lewistown placed a bid for $25,111 and Steven Watson of Watson’s Optical in Lewistown placed a bid for $10,600.
Swanger said, “I would like to see it prevented from becoming another dismal property in town.”
Council member Larry “Heavy” Searer made a motion to accept Swanger’s bid and Council Vice President Robert Barlett seconded.
The motion passed 5-2 with Council President Matt Moore and council member Scott Gutshall in opposition.
Later, council recommended approval of Resolution 2025 – 5 to finalize paperwork for the Leasing 2 loan application for the Heritage Fire Co. fire truck.
According to the Borough Council, this purchase will be made with a $200,000 down payment from fire tax monies, and the total cost of the fire truck is $1,460,726. The remainder of this cost will be paid through a 4.79% interest rate loan from the company Leasing 2.
Council member Scott Gutshall motioned and member James Steele seconded to approve Resolution 2025 – 5. The motion passed 5-2 with Moore and Searer in opposition.
Earlier during the meeting, members approved a facility use request for Calvary Bible Church at Rec Park for the church’s community cookout at the end of May.
Borough Manager Fink also announced an event at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at the WasteWater Treatment Plant. Pennsylvania State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff will be in attendance to tour the facility and announce a grant.
Members approved the purchase of 8 — 3 yard dumpsters at a cost of $7,982 to be paid out of the refuse account.
After an executive session toward the meeting’s close, members reconvened to add three items to the agenda.
Council moved to add a recommendation and voted in favor to hire pool manager Kylie Strawser at $16 per hour and assistant pool manager Ella Knepp at $14 per hour; Searer was in opposition.
Members then moved to add a recommendation and voted in favor to give Lewistown Elementary School a discount for a pool party; Searer was in opposition.
All members approved and voted in favor to add the recommendation to vote to accept the deed for the West Third Street Building known as the old fire station building. Because the building will no longer be in use as a fire station, the council become the owners as stated in the deed.
The Lewistown Borough Council is scheduled to meet next at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 5, in the council chambers of the Lewistown Municipal Building.
