Junction tanker truck driver cited for incident by police

LEWISTOWN — The driver of the Junction Fire Co. tanker truck, which overturned while en route to a brush fire on Sunday, March 23, has been cited for careless driving, according to a release issued by the Lewistown Police Department on Friday.

According to the report, which was posted on the Lewistown Police Department’s Facebook page, officers responded to the intersection of West Third and Grand streets at noon on March 23 for a reportable crash.

Police gave an account of the incident which stated a Subaru passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on West Third Street, facing a green light at the intersection of Grand Street. The driver of the Subaru entered the intersection and was struck by a fire tanker that was traveling northbound through the intersection facing a steady red light, the report said.

The Subaru was significantly damaged and the tanker rolled onto its roof, struck a house and caused damage to a utility pole that held a transformer, the report said. Several residences and businesses were affected from a power outage caused by the crash, the report said.

Two firefighters in the fire tanker were extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital for medical evaluation, the report said. A previous post on the Junction Fire Co.’s Facebook page had stated two firefighters were sent to area hospitals after the incident.

One firefighter was treated at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, while the other was transported to Hershey Medical Center for specialized treatment, officials said. The current condition of those firefighters is unknown.

Officers said they spoke with several people involved at the scene and during follow up investigations. The driver of the tanker, who was not identified in the report, told officers he believed a truck in the left lane of West Third Street was blocking the roadway.

The report said the driver of the tanker estimated that he was going 40- to 45-miles per hour when he entered the intersection. Officers said they spoke with the person who stopped on West Third Street, and they reported that they were just pulling over yielding to the oncoming emergency vehicle.

The report said the driver of the Subaru failed to hear or see the tanker truck before entering the intersection in the right lane of West Third Street. Police said the fire tanker did have its lights and siren engaged when entering the intersection.

The tanker truck driver failed to slow down at the intersection and failed to drive with due regard to the safety of others which are required elements when operating an emergency vehicle, the report said, which was the reason for the citation being issued to the driver.

On Saturday, the Junction Fire Co. also posted a message informing pool owners that they would not be able to provide pool water services for the foreseeable future. In the post, Junction Fire Co. officials recommended reaching out to other area fire companies to check on pool water availability.
