Veteran announces bid for county sheriff
Doug Cramer
LEWISTOWN — Doug Cramer, United States Coast Guard veteran, former Pennsylvania State Police Trooper, and current Mifflin County Sheriff’s Deputy, has announced his candidacy for Mifflin County Sheriff in the spring 2025 primary election.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to take the next step in my duties with the Mifflin Coun ty Sheriff’s Department. Serving as Sheriff requires a candidate with knowledge and understanding of every aspect of law enforcement and the court system, which I’ve gained through my many years of law enforcement service,” said Cramer.
After serving four years in the United States Coast Guard, Cramer joined the Pennsylvania State Police, where he served 21 years as a Trooper, advancing to the ranks of corporal and patrol unit supervisor. Following his retirement from the Pennsylvania State Police, Cramer served as a Detective with the Lewistown Police Department, a county detective with the Mifflin County District Attorney’s office, and a victim advocate with the abuse network, before joining the Mifflin County Sheriff’s Department in 2017. He has completed all necessary training and certifications to serve as sheriff.
“I’ve spent my entire career protecting and serving the public, in various capacities. I believe with my extensive experience and training, there’s no more qualified candidate to fill the position of Mifflin County Sheriff” said Cramer.
Cramer resides in Lewistown with his wife, Lisa. They have two daughters, Katelyn and Jenna, and one granddaughter, Aubree.
“I raised my children in Mifflin County, and my granddaughter will grow up here. This is a great place to raise a family. As Sheriff, I’ll have the opportunity to help keep every family in Mifflin County safe.”
Aside from his professional service to the community, Cramer has also served the public in other capacities, sitting on the board of directors for both The Abuse Network and The Juniata Valley YMCA, and serving as a founding member and past president for Mifflin County Kops 4 Kids, a free program for local youth that focuses on discipline, self-esteem, teamwork, and many other issues facing students. He is a member and Past Master of the Lewistown Masonic Lodge and a member of the National Fraternal Order of Police.
“I’ve always taken a great interest in serving this community, especially the kids. If elected Sheriff, I’ll continue to engage the community and offer outreach to build positive relationships between law enforcement and the students and citizens of Mifflin County.”
Cramer looks forward to continuing his long career of public service if elected. “I’ve dedicated my life to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of my community. There’s nothing I’d rather do than to continue this service to the people of Mifflin County as the next sheriff.”
