Curtain to rise on ‘Anastasia,’ fundraisers this weekend

As the famous line goes, the show must go on. So, don’t let the forecasts for snow make you forget about Mifflin County High School Drama Club’s production of “Anastasia: The Musical,” which opens Friday.

It’s one of the things you should be sure to check out this weekend. Here’s what’s going on around the Juniata Valley:

MCHS Drama Club presents: ‘Anastasia: The Musical’

Journey to the past with the Mifflin County High School Drama Club as they travel from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s. The story follows Anya, a brave young woman who sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family. Performances are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium, located at 501 Sixth St., Lewistown. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased through www.mcsdk12.org and at the door one hour prior to each performance.

• Ham Loaf Dinner: A ham loaf dinner fundraiser will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the McAlisterville Fire Hall, 461 Main St., McAlisterville. The meal includes: ham loaf, macaroni and cheese, green beans, applesauce, rolls with butter, dessert, water, juice and tea. Eat-in or takeout is available. The cost is $20 for adults and ages 12 and under are $10. Proceeds benefit the Harper’s Warriors Foundation.

• Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1 Soup Sale: Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1, 510 Washington Ave., Mifflintown, will host a soup sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Soups include ham and bean, beef vegetable and chicken corn and will be sold by the quart for each $8. Presale is available. Place your order with any member of the fire company.

Spaghetti Dinner for First Responders: The Lewistown Elks Lodge, 229 West Third St., Lewistown, is holding a Spaghetti Dinner for First Responders on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. This dinner will be free for first responders and is open to the public by donation.

Dance, dance, dance

Daddy Daughter Dance: Twirl, Spin and Dance the night away at the Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday at Middlecreek Area YMCA, 67 Elm St., Beaver Springs. Grandpas, uncles, father figures or other special male guests are welcome. Check-in starts at 5 p.m., with the dance will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets for Dads cost $15 for YMCA members and $20 for non-members; and daughters: $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Prom Gown Giveaway: The McClure First United Methodist Church, 10 W. Specht St., McClure will have a Prom Gown Giveaway from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. No appointment is necessary. For more information, call or text (717) 953-5573.

The Prom Shop: Helping Hands of Juniata County’s Prom Shop is open from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the old Thompsontown Elementary School, located on School Street, Thompsontown. Find a wide selection of gorgeous dresses and shoes and even some things for the guys to wear, too at no cost. The shop is open to anyone in Juniata County going to prom. The Juniata County Library, 498 Jefferson St., Mifflintown, has scheduled a Junk Journaling Workshop on Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Make and bind a handmade book filled with recycled materials and personal items to store memories and ideas. Materials will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own items. Sign up and pay at the front desk. The cost is $20.
