MCHS’s Smith honored by commissioners
LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County Commissioners honored Mifflin County High School cross country star Carter Smith at their meeting Thursday morning.
Junior Carter Smith competed in the Pennsylvania State Championship for cross country and placed first out of 1,703 competitors.
In turn, the Commissioners approved and presented a Proclamation to Carter Smith in honor of his “extraordinary dedication, perseverance, and athletic excellence as a member of the Mifflin County Cross Country team.”
The Proclamation states, “And whereas through countless hours of training, mental focus, and an unwavering commitment to personal and team goals Carter has achieved a remarkable accomplishment becoming Mifflin County’s first State Cross Country champion. And whereas Carter’s victory not only reflects individual talent and work ethic it also brings immense pride to Mifflin County High School, his coaches, teammates, family, and the entire county.”
The success that Carter achieved is sure to be an inspiration to current and future student athletes as it demonstrates the importance of hard work and determination.
“I want to thank the Commissioners for recognizing my achievement,” expressed Smith. “I want to thank my friends and family and my teammates, and my coaches for a great season.”
In other business, Commissioners:
• Approved a request for exoneration of 2024 county portion per capita taxes;
• Approved the Purchase of Service Agreement with Mark Remy, Esquire, from the Law Offices of Knepp and Snook, as Assistant District Attorney for the period Jan. 1, 2025 through Dec. 31, 2025;
• Approved the Purchase of Service Agreement with Sandra Herto to provide cleaning services at the Magisterial District Judge 58-3-03;
• Ratified the Agreement with the Teamsters Local Union No. 778 Correctional Facility Unit for the period Jan. 1, 2025 through Dec. 31, 2027;
• Authorized the submission of an application for funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Local Share Account $997,189.00 for rehabilitation of a portion of the Mifflin County Correctional Facility;
• Approved the 2024 PEMA 9-1-1 Statewide Interconnectivity Funding Grant Agreement $124,907.94;
• Approved the Community Development Block Grant Program Income Reutilization Plan;
• Adopted the Community Development Block Grant Excessive Force Policy;
• Approved the Community Development Block Grant Code of Conduct Policy;
• Approved the Community Development Block Grant Financial Management Plan;
• Approved the Purchase of Service Agreement with BMZ Law, P.C., Lewistown, for County Solicitor for the period Jan. 1, 2025 through Dec. 31, 2025;
• Accepted the resignation of Gage Hood from part-time Correction Officer effective Nov. 20, 2024;
• Accepted the resignation of Probation Officer Kenneth Winkelman effective Dec. 6, 2024;
• Approved the addition of part-time Deputy Sheriff duties to Security Guard Joseph Lyter effective Dec. 6, 2024;
• Approved the retirement of Barry Kearns from Lieutenant at the Correctional Facility effective Jan. 2, 2025.
The Commissioners will meet again on Dec. 19, 2024 for their regularly scheduled meeting.
