Commissioners point to inflation as reason for possible tax increase

MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata County officials are anticipating a tax increase, according to a draft of the commissioner’s approved 2025 budget.

At the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday morning, Juniata County Commissioners displayed the proposed budget for 2025 and adopted a resolution which requested permission from the Court to raise the mileage limit levied on real estate.

The $33.6 million budget includes $5.9 million going toward general government, $5.4 million going toward public safety, $4.7 million going toward health and welfare, and $2.2 million going toward miscellaneous.

The budget will also include $258,000 toward road projects, $319,321 toward culture and recreation, $111,350 toward conservation and development, and $ 322,290 toward debt services.

The revenues for 2025 include $9 million in taxes, $4.7 million in intergovernmental revenue, $4.2 million in charges for service, $1.5 million in miscellaneous, and $389,305 in interest.

Juniata County property owners will be experiencing a tax increase in 2025 following the approval from the Court to increase the millage limit to 30 mills.

According to a press release sent out Tuesday, this will be the fourth increase to real estate millage since 2006.

The release states, Juniata County’s finances have been “dramatically affected by inflation” and it is because of this, “a real estate millage increase for the 2025 budget year will be necessary to maintain the fine balance between fiscal conservatism and competent, quality public service.”

The budget document is available to the public on the county website at www.juniataco.org.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved a certification statement for County Children & Youth Social Service programs for July 1 through Sept. 30;
