Remains located near murder suspect’s residence

REEDSVILLE — Officials have located human remains that are believed to be from a 51-year-old Maryland man reported missing earlier this week.

Reedsville resident Brandon Ross Holbrook was arrested on charges of first-degree murder Wednesday, that linked him to Joseph Anthony Shymanski’s disappearance.

The remains were located several hundred yards from 47-year-old Holbrook’s residence, according to a release from Mifflin County Regional Police, who said that DNA confirmation will come at a later time.

Mifflin County Regional Police Chief Andre French said in a news release Thursday that a homicide is thought to have occurred at Shymanski’s residence in Huntingtown, Calvert County, Maryland.

“This is very much an active homicide investigation,” French said.

There was a large-scale police presence in the Reedsville area Thursday.

“In addition, secondary locations may be identified based on findings at the Honeybrook crime scene,” French said.

Regional Police are assisting the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department, Pennsylvania State Police, FBI officials in State College in the investigation.

Detectives will be visiting businesses in the area in search of “specific video surveillance footage,” French said in his release.

Officials will also be interviewing residents and potential witnesses.

Police are discouraging the public from visiting the Honeybrook area “as the crime scene is large and sprawling.”

Police restrictions to the area are intended to protect potential evidence and maintain case integrity.

A news release from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau states that deputies from the Bureau responded to the report of a missing person in Huntingtown, Maryland.

Police said Shymanski was reported missing by a family member and it was determined that foul play was suspected.

As the investigation developed this week, detectives from the Criminal Investigative Bureau traveled to Reedsville and executed several search warrants. Officials said the incident was determined to be isolated and there are no other suspects at this time.

In a Facebook post, the Calvert County Sheriff’s office sent out condolences to the Shymanski family.

“In the wake of this tragic case, our condolences go out to the family of Mr. Joseph Shymanski, especially his children. Our thoughts remain with them at this very difficult time,” the post read.
