MIFFLINTOWN — If it’s for a good cause, Juniata High School ninth-grade student Ryder Smith will gladly turn orange.
The same is true for 4-year-old Charlotte Shertzer, although green seemed to be more her color.
The Juniata High School Student Council’s Second Annual Color Run will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3 at the high school, located at 3931 William Penn Highway, Mifflintown.
Participants run, walk or dance around the designated 5-kilometer course or a kid-run course and be sprayed or doused with color at various stations along the route. At the finish line, one final color celebration will be held.
Proceeds benefit Juniata High School and Tuscarora Junior High School students.
“This year, it will once again be used to cover activity fees,” Juniata High School biology teacher and student council advisor Riley Shertzer added. “It will also be used to establish a scholarship fund for band members in financial need for the Disney World Trip that happens every four years.”
Participants are encouraged to come dressed in white because every kilometer has a station staffed with students, who will throw a different color of powder on you. The colors will show up better on white, but all colors will wash out. There will be prizes for the top three male and female finishers.
“This year all of our sports teams saw a little over 20 percent increase in participation, which is great to see kids getting involved and it helps build school morale by having kids participating in extracurriculars,” Shertzer said. “Last year’s money was used to buy the band and music department a new sound board, which they have used for all of our school drama productions and concerts.”
Shertzer said the event brings students together – from all walks of life, from the athletes, band musicians and club members — to put on a fun event for a great cause.
“It’s just really cool to see the dynamic of the students from different backgrounds working together, and being invested in our school and each other,” Shertzer said. Even her daughter, Charlotte, had a blast.
Check-in starts at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $20 and does not include a T-shirt. The kids run costs $16.
“New this year we have hired Falcon Race Timing to do official race timing,” Shertzer added. “Last year, we had lots of people participating just for fun, moms pushing kids in strollers, groups of friends walking, etc. and that’s still encouraged. We just wanted to add timing to make it more official for those that requested it after last year’s race.”
Registration forms are available on the Juniata High School Student Council’s Facebook page.
