Man on fentanyl led police on chase
Nail told police he used fentanyl prior to pursuit
MIFFLINTOWN — A 38-year-old man was arrested Thursday after police said he led officers on a chase from Mifflintown Sheetz to the Mifflin County line, reaching speeds up to 125 mph while on fentanyl.
Justin Blair Neil, of Lewistown, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister Thursday on charges of fleeing police, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, reckless endangerment and related summary traffic offenses.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, emergency services were called to Sheetz in Mifflintown for the complaint of an unconscious person with blood on his shirt in a Ford Escape.
Police said when they arrived on scene, they saw a Ford Escape fail to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection of Parkside Court and state Route 35 N, Fermanagh Township.
The report says police activated their sirens and saw soda bottles being deposited from the vehicle onto the highway.
Police said the vehicle used the limited access highway on-ramp to travel westbound on state Route 322 West, a 55 mph area. For one mile, police paced the Ford at 125 mph.
The report states that the Ford failed to pull over and that an officer followed the vehicle, which was weaving across lanes to evade police, failing to use a turn signal and driving on the shoulder.
The report says the pursuit ended by disabling the Ford when approaching the Juniata County/Mifflin County line on state Route 322 West, Fermanagh Township, Juniata County.
According to the report, Neil “panicked and fled because he felt someone was coming after him with intent to cause harm.”
Police located the soda bottles deposited from the vehicle during the pursuit and found clear dime-sized baggies with a powdery residue of an unidentified substance.
Following an evaluation, it was determined that Neil was under the influence of a narcotic and displayed signs of impairment. When asked, Neil told police he was under the influence of fentanyl.
Neil is being held in Mifflin County Correctional Facility, unable to post $50,000 bail. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing set for 10 a.m. March 15 before Magisterial District Judge Tracy Powell.
