2 women charged in convenience store thefts
Police: 3 incidents occurred over 8-day span
LEWISTOWN — Police have arrested two Lewistown women and charged them in connection with a string of alleged robberies over an eight-day span at convenience stores in Lewistown Borough.
Police have charged 25-year-old Leeza I. Enriquez with committing the alleged robberies and her roommate 33-year-old Kacy Aaron Yohn with knowingly assisting her during two of them.
On May 28, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by police, at approximately 4:20 a.m., a person described as being “a slender built individual, reported to be 5 foot, 8 inches tall, wearing all black clothing, black pants with zippers, dark colored baseball style hat, brandishing a baseball bat (black with bright lettering)” entered the Sunoco at 221 S. Main St., used the bat to damage property within the store and demanded cash before fleeing southbound on foot.
Police said the next night, at approximately 9:10 p.m., the West End Service Store at 437 West Fourth St. was robbed by “an individual of slender build, wearing a gray sweatshirt cinched around the face, black pants with zippers, black shoes, dark colored baseball style hat, black gloves (right glove has red markings) and brandishing a bat (black with bright lettering) as a weapon.” Police said as the alleged robber entered the store, lifted their sweatshirt to produce the bat from their pants and in doing so revealed a black Batman-style logo T-shirt before waving the bat and demanding cash. The alleged robber then fled on foot before being spotted getting into a white Nissan Altima driven by a white female.
Police said later investigation revealed Yohn had rented a white Nissan Altima earlier that day and had been seen on social media in photos with a person matching the alleged robber’s description who was wearing a black Batman style T-shirt.
Then, on Wednesday, at approximately 10:30 p.m., police said the same Sunoco station was robbed again, this time at gun point. Police said a woman identified as Yohn entered the store prior to the robbery, was seen talking on her cellphone, then looking around while getting coffee and exiting the store. Police said after Yohn left the store, the alleged robber described as “wearing all black, a dark colored baseball style hat, who is of slender build and carrying a handgun in their right hand” approached the clerk and ushered him inside before demanding cash from the store clerk and fleeing southbound on foot.
Police later reviewed surveillance camera footage from a nearby business that showed a black sedan pulling into its parking lot and a person matching Yohn’s description getting out and walking toward the Sunoco station while a passenger can be seen still in the car. Police said a few minutes later, the passenger exited the car and walked toward the Sunoco station before the driver returned and maneuvered the car into a “ready/waiting” position. Police said approximately one minute later, the car could be seen driving toward the Sunoco station and approximately 15 minutes after the alleged robbery, Yohn and Enriquez were observed by police as they returned to their Pannebaker Avenue residence. Police said Enriquez is 5-foot-8, is of slender build and was wearing a dark colored sweatshirt and dark pants.
Police then obtained a search warrant for the women’s residence and found a baseball bat with yellow lettering that matched the description of the one used in the first two alleged robberies, a T-shirt with the Batman logo, a pair of “grayish” pants with zippers and other clothing matching items worn during the alleged robberies. Police said they also found a revolver-style pellet gun in the attic, matching the description of the gun brandished during the second alleged Sunoco robbery. Police said a receipt was found showing the gun had been purchased just hours earlier at a sporting goods store in State College.
During an interview with police, Yohn said she did not remember the May 28 incident because she had been taking prescription medication, but that on May 29, Enriquez had asked Yohn to pick her up behind the West End Service Store. After waiting in her car in an alleyway behind the store, Yohn said Enriquez entered the car with a bat in her possession. Police said Yohn also admitted to parking where she had been seen on surveillance video just prior to the Wednesday night incident and walking to the store. Yohn said she had sent Enriquez a text message that was code for her to not rob the store, but that Enriquez did anyway. Yohn said Enriquez gave her around $200 from the robberies, according to the affidavit.
Enriquez is charged with three counts of robbery by threatening to inflict serious bodily injury, three counts of robbery by threatening immediate bodily injury, three counts of theft by unlawful taking, three counts of receiving stolen property, three counts of simple assault, two counts of criminal use of a communication facility and one count of criminal mischief. She is currently incarcerated in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility, unable to post the $1 million bail set.
Yohn is charged with two counts of assisting in a robbery, two counts of criminal use of a communication facility and one count of receiving stolen property. She is currently incarcerated at MCCF, unable to post the $500,000 bail set.
