America: 250 years of Patriots and Patriotism

America: 250 years of Patriots and Patriotism

I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding, fighting, Yankee man

I love mom and apple pie

And the freedoms that we all enjoy across this beautiful land

I worked hard, and I fight hard for the old red, white and blue

And I’ll die a whole lot harder if it comes to where I have to

I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding fighting Yankee man

And when I see old Glory waving

I think of all the brave men

Who have fought and died for what is right and wrong

And when I see old Glory burning

My blood begins to churnin’

And I could do some fighting of my own

I don’t believe in violence

I’m a God-fearing man

But I’d stand up for my country just as long as I can stand

‘Cause I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding fighting Yankee man

I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding fighting Yankee man

And I enjoy the liberty of being what I wanna to be

And achieve any goals I can

I was taught to turn the other cheek

But Teddy used to say

“Walk soft and pack a big stick, but never walk away”

And I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding fighting Yankee man

And when I see old Glory waving

I think of all the brave men

That have fought and died for what is right and wrong

And when I see old Glory burning

My blood begins to churnin’

And I could do some fighting of my own

‘Cause I love all my brothers

And we’re proud of our birth

We’ve got the greatest country here on God’s green earth

And I’m a flag waving patriotic

Nephew of my Uncle Sam

A rough riding fighting Yankee man

–“Song of the Patriot”

Words and music by Marty Robbins / Shirl Milete

It began as an experiment. The concept was unique and would require the best minds of their time, the will of every citizen, the courage and determination of an under-manned military, the good fortunes of fate and the guiding hand of God. The seeds of freedom blossomed into the Declaration of Independence, followed by war, and eventually the Constitution of the United States, the foundation on which the Republic was built.

The founding of a nation is not an easy task. From the earliest signs of revolution to the final British surrender, America stared down the odds. It emerged victorious in its quest and independence was at hand. The building of a nation was next. There were struggles along the way, 250 years worth to be exact. But, the will of Patriots has endured.

Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Yorktown, Gettysburg, Midway, Normandy, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other military operations around the world involved American Patriots. The Revolution, the Civil War, two World Wars, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, countless natural disasters, assassinations, disease outbreaks, uprisings, riots and discontent tested the fabric and strength of the nation. It survived. It continues to survive.

The nation’s milestones are numerous and serve as proof of the experiment’s success — countless discoveries in science and medicine that benefit mankind; a space program that accepted and met the challenge of landing a man on the Moon and safely returning him to Earth, expanding the horizons of the universe that we continue to explore today; providing aid and assistance to struggling nations in need, brokering peace between war-torn countries; becoming the beacon of freedom, hope and inspiration for millions around the world.

Time after time throughout history, the United States has taken the lead in world matters. Recent events serve as a reminder. In 2025, U.S. Forces launched precision strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites with assistance from our Israeli allies. The combined mission rid the globe of a nuclear menace with aims to unleash terrorism and death anywhere and everywhere. In January 2026, a U.S. military operation led to the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, ending the reign of a drug-trafficking killer.

We stand up for what we believe.

Why has America emerged as the greatest nation on Earth? The concept of freedom. Freedom for its citizens and freedom in opposition to Nazism, communism, socialism, terrorism, fascism and any other “ism” that threatens to undermine the Republic. The battle wages on.

What began as a rebellion evolved into an achievement, forged through fire and hell and the foresight of the Founding Fathers. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Hamilton and others passed the torch through time to their successors. Maintaining freedom requires 24/7/365 vigilance. Patriots have kept watch for 250 years.

The annals of history are full of the deeds of Patriots, some more famous or well-known than others. Each state, county, city or town across the U.S. has its own Patriots, known to a few if that. They are Patriots, too, even if history books have no record of their contribution.

What defines a Patriot? Each individual more than likely has his or her own definition. There are certain qualities and characteristics that fit the description, including love of country and love of community and the willingness to uphold, improve and defend them. A Patriot believes in the values that made America a shining beacon to the world, respects all people and institutions and honors those who came before and the sacrifice they made for all. Patriots designate town streets “Freedom Avenue” and local developments “Liberty Place” as reminders of our heritage.

They come from all walks of life, of various backgrounds, with differences that tend to separate: gender, religious faith, ethnicity, color, age, social distinction. They are neighbors, friends and fellow citizens and the common denominator is freedom. They are Patriots.

The stories in the 2026 edition of Juniata Valley Magazine involve many familiar names and faces as well some being introduced for the first time. Their contributions to others may be formal or informal, but in their own unique ways, they uphold our founding principles. Through the eyes of our community, they are Patriots as well.
