Learn about ponds in walk with Penn State Extension

UNIVERSITY PARK — Pond owners, pond managers, residents of lake communities and local officials can gain practical knowledge from an upcoming Penn State Extension workshop focused on the basics of pond water quality, ecology, and plant identification and management.

The “Twilight Pond Walk” will occur in multiple locations in August and October. Participants can choose the location and date that works best for them.

• Venango County: 7-9 p.m. Aug. 19, at the Aikin property, 706 Lake Creek Rd., Cooperstown.

• Mercer County: 7-9 p.m. Aug. 20, at the Balunek property, 447 Wise Rd., Jamestown.

• Beaver County: 6-8 p.m. Aug. 27, at Sahli Nature Park, 194 McKinley Rd., Beaver Falls.

• Centre County: 3:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 24, at Mendel’s Way Greenhouse and Farm Research Facility, 131 Mendels Way, Bellefonte.

Ponds are prevalent in the Pennsylvania landscape and provide enjoyment to numerous landowners, organizers said. While some ponds occur naturally, many have been created for various purposes. This event is aimed at assisting private pond owners and members of lake-based community organizations with making informed and sound management decisions.

The workshop will cover basic pond plant identification; how to conduct basic pond water quality tests; how land uses and runoff can affect ponds; basic pond ecology; and pond water testing.

Instructors will set aside ample time for discussion and interaction as the group explores these unique ecosystems.

Organizers noted that the event will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and for walking on grass.

Space is limited, so preregistration is encouraged. Registration deadlines vary by location.
