Dairy facts from Juniata County Dairy Ambassador

Hi, I’m Jackson Campbell, a Juniata County Dairy Ambassador. I want to share some dairy facts and maybe a joke or two. Prepare to be a-mooo-sed.

Dairy cows have an excellent sense of smell and can detect odors up to six miles away.

A dairy cow can eat up to 100 – 150 pounds of feed a day.

Cows have 32 teeth but do not have upper front teeth.

Now for the jokes.

What did the Mama Cow say to the calf? It’s pasture bedtime.

Why do cows have hooves instead of feet? Because they lactose.

Here is a recipe you could take along to any picnic this summer and help everyone get their three servings of dairy every day.

Stripe brownies

Ingredients:

• 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour

• 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1⁄2 teaspoon table salt

• 1 (10-ounce) package bittersweet chocolate morsels

• 1 cup butter, cut into pieces

• 1⁄3 cup whole milk

• 4 large eggs

• 2 cups granulated sugar

Milk Glaze

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 5 teaspoons whole milk

• 1⁄8 teaspoon food coloring paste

Preheat oven to 350. Line a 13×9 with foil and lightly grease. Whisk together the first four ingredients in a bowl. Set aside. Microwave chocolate and butter in a large glass microwave-safe bowl at high for 1 ½

minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Whisk in milk. Stir in eggs and sugar until blended; stir in flour mixture. Pour mixture into pan.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack and cut into rectangles.

To make the milk glaze:

Mix powdered sugar and milk with an electric mixer until smooth. Tint with food coloring paste.

Drizzle over brownies and enjoy.

Starting at $2.99/week.
