LEWISTOWN -- Long before millions of online viewers discovered Simply Three through viral videos and innovative string arrangements, bassist Nick Villalobos and cellist Zack Clark shared a common belief: classical musicians shouldn’t be limited to traditional paths.
That philosophy helped launch one of the world’s most successful classical crossover ensembles and will bring the acclaimed trio to the auditorium at Mifflin County High School in Lewistown on Thursday, Nov. 12, when Simply Three performs as part of the Mifflin-Juniata Concert Association’s 2026-27 concert season.
The 7 p.m. performance promises an evening that combines the power of contemporary music with the artistry of classically trained musicians, creating a concert experience that has attracted audiences around the globe.
Founded in 2010, Simply Three has spent more than 15 years redefining what audiences expect from a string ensemble. Featuring Villalobos on bass, Clark on cello and Glen McDaniel on violin, the group has become known for transforming popular songs into cinematic instrumental experiences while also creating original compositions that showcase both technical mastery and emotional depth.
The musicians’ journey began with a desire to forge a different path than many of their classical peers.
“We didn’t want to take the traditional route of a classical musician, which is either to be in an orchestra or get a professorship somewhere,” Villalobos said. “And we thought, ‘We like all these different kinds of music. We always liked rock music, rap, heavy metal, R&B, all that stuff. Why don’t we try to do this on our classical instruments?'”
That idea has resonated with audiences worldwide.
Today, Simply Three has generated more than 330 million YouTube views, more than 100 million Spotify streams and hundreds of millions of additional streams across digital platforms. Their inventive arrangements of songs by artists such as Adele, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, OneRepublic and Imagine Dragons have helped build a fan base that stretches far beyond the traditional classical music audience.
Their music videos, often filmed in dramatic outdoor settings and scenic locations, have become a defining part of the group’s identity. One of the trio’s most popular videos, a cover of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up,” has attracted tens of millions of views, while original works such as “Rain” have further demonstrated the group’s artistic range.
McDaniel joined the ensemble in 2014 after meeting Villalobos through a mutual friend. Reflecting on those early days, McDaniel said, “The vibes of the trio felt solid from the start.”
That chemistry remains evident onstage, where Simply Three’s live shows blur the line between concert hall performance and modern entertainment experience.
Rather than remaining stationary behind music stands, the musicians bring a dynamic energy to their performances, combining movement, interaction and powerful arrangements that allow audiences to hear familiar music in completely new ways.
The group describes its repertoire as spanning genres and generations, featuring artists and composers as varied as Adele, George Gershwin, Ed Sheeran and Michael Jackson. Original compositions also play a prominent role, helping define a sound that combines classical precision with contemporary appeal.
Critics have embraced that genre-defying approach, praising Simply Three as “highly imaginative and well played.”
Beyond concert halls, the trio has performed for major organizations and events including Microsoft, YouTube, American Express and The Emmys Afterparty. Their success has also led to collaborations with high-profile artists and sold-out performances across the country.
The upcoming Lewistown appearance continues a tradition of bringing nationally recognized talent to the Juniata Valley through the efforts of the Mifflin-Juniata Concert Association.
Simply Three’s visit offers something especially unique for local audiences. Classical music fans will appreciate the trio’s technical virtuosity, while younger listeners may be drawn to the familiar songs and contemporary influences woven throughout the program.
Ultimately, that’s the secret behind the group’s enduring popularity.
Simply Three honors the traditions of classical music while fearlessly exploring new directions, creating performances that feel both timeless and modern.
When the trio steps onto the Mifflin County High School stage Nov. 12, audiences can expect more than a concert. They’ll witness three musicians who have built an international following by proving that a violin, cello and bass can be every bit as exciting, expressive and powerful as any modern band.
