Homemade ice cream is a welcome summer treat

2 min read

Hello from the kitchen!

As August moves along quickly we can't forget to enjoy our summer treat of homemade ice cream! I have a couple recipes for ice cream but I tend to dump and stir till it's a good mixture. If you don't have an ice cream maker, there are some good brands in the stores. I use an ice cream attachment on my mixer. As a child we always had vanilla ice cream cranked by my older siblings. Thank goodness I was too small to run the crank! My dad would bring ripe bananas home from the store where he loafed! Put that on a big bowl of ice cream and we were happy kids! Back in the day we were content with the simple things like ice cream, bike riding and sledding on car hoods! So here are a couple ice cream recipes for you to try.

Vanilla Ice Cream

• 3 cups whole milk

• 2 3/4 cups sugar

• 3/4 tsp salt

• 3 cups half-half

• 2 TBSP vanilla extract

• 6 cups whipping cream

Scald milk until bubbles form around the edge of the pot. Remove from heat and add the sugar and salt, stirring until dissolved. Stir in the half-half, vanilla and whipping cream. Cover and refrigerate. Freeze according to your maker's directions. Recipe is for a six quart maker. You can add fresh fruits, berries or peanut butter to this recipe for a change of flavor.

Old fashioned

Peach shakes

Fresh peaches 12-15

• 1/2 cup sugar

• Milk

Peel and slice the peaches. Put into a large bowl and add the sugar. Toss the peaches till they are coated with the sugar. Place into freezer safe containers (quart) and freeze. Remove a container of frozen peaches and let sit for half an hour to partly thaw. Pour into a blender and add milk (Depends how thick you like it). Blend well until nice and smooth. Grab a straw and enjoy!

Enjoy your summer! Stay cool and eat well my friends!
