Independents in Pa. closed primaries seek help from state’s high court

HARRISBURG (AP) — Voters hoping to open up Pennsylvania’s closed primary system to independents asked the state Supreme Court on Tuesday to declare the current system violates the state constitution’s right to free and fair elections. Four independent voters asked the justices to take up the case directly, arguing that in many districts and in many races, including for the great majority of legislative seats, the primary elections among Republicans and Democrats are the only real contests, not the fall election. There are relatively few “swing” districts — in most parts of ...

Seattle’s Raleigh becomes first catcher to rule Home Run Derby

ATLANTA — Cal Raleigh approached the All-Star Home Run Derby like a day on the lawn. Dad was on the mound and baby brother was behind the plate. Only this time, there were tens of thousands looking on at Truist Park and a $1 million prize. “It goes all the way back to him coming home and me forcing him to throw me a ball and hit it in the backyard or in the house or something probably shouldn’t be doing,” a beaming Cal said, flanked by Todd and Todd Jr. after defeating Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero 18-15 in the final round Monday night. A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at running back, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Mamdani threat worse than believed

A Florida trade group is using what it calls “the unacceptable risk” of a Zohran Mamdani mayoralty to entice Big Apple CEOs into moving their firms and families to the Sunshine State. Smart marketing: Business leaders are already doing the Mamdani math — adding up the massive costs of his promised public spending on universal child care, transportation and other freebies. A Mayor Mamdani will either raise New York’s already high taxes to pay for all these goodies, or his reckless spending will plunge the city into fiscal chaos, leading to draconian austerity measures like ...

The root cause of the firewall operating system error that disrupted 911 call centers across the state on Friday is still under investigation. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency told The Center Square on Monday that Comtech, the company that runs the state’s Next Generation 911 system, resolved the issue within hours. “Since the intermittent outage was resolved Friday evening, the NG911 system successfully processed over 47,000 emergency calls over the weekend across the Commonwealth,” said Jeff Jumper, the department’s deputy communications director. The use of ...
