Physician bills patient for exam they didn’t attend

DEAR DR. ROACH: When I have appointments with my physicians (at our local, highly rated academic health system), they no longer do a physical exam. But in the after-visit note, there is a documented and complete physical exam that doesn’t reflect reality. This happened on all types of visits, including annual visits and pre- and post-surgery visits. If I am examined by a resident, the attending physician will attest in the after-visit note to having examined me alongside the resident when, in actuality, the physician was not in the room. I find this appalling, but it seems to be ...

Boyfriend’s father takes anger out on me

Dear Annie: I’m a 45-year-old woman, and my boyfriend is 36. His family loves me, except for his dad. I don’t know what I have done for him to dislike me. I should say that at one point, in the past, he used to like me. When my boyfriend’s mom was diagnosed with cancer, I was there each time she was in the hospital. My boyfriend and I would take turns with his dad staying at the hospital overnight so she was never alone. When she was sent home from hospice, I quit working and spent a month at their home taking care of her, including cooking and cleaning. I would help give her ...

Scheffler sets leading target at British Open

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Scottie Scheffler had no idea what was coming his way Friday in the British Open. He warmed up in a short-sleeved shirt. The umbrella was out when he walked off the first green. For the thousands at Royal Portrush watching him, they knew exactly what to expect from the world’s No. 1 player, and Scheffler delivered another relentless performance. Three straight birdies to close the gap. Two more at the end to take the lead. Scheffler had a 15-foot putt that was one turn away from dropping for a final birdie. He happily settled for a 7-under 64, his ...

On sexual violence, progressives make many exceptions for Israel

By nightfall on Oct. 7, 2023, enough details of what several thousand Hamas gunmen had done to about 1,200 Israeli civilians had emerged to make clear the scope of their savagery: youngsters executed en masse running for their lives from a dance festival, families tied together and burned alive or machine-gunned to death as they sat trembling and begging for their lives, toddlers and babies slaughtered. In the following days, eyewitness accounts, video footage, forensic evidence and even taped admissions revealed one particular aspect of the savagery that had gotten “lost” in the ...

Trump should index capital gains tax for inflation

President Donald Trump should follow up on his historic “big, beautiful” tax bill with an extra booster shot for the economy by immediately indexing the capital gains taxes for inflation. There is a reasonable chance he can do this without having to go through Congress. And our sources in the administration tell us Trump is interested in doing just that. The tax on inflationary gains is patently unfair. Consider a middle-class investor who bought a stock at the start of the Biden presidency for $10,000 and sold it off four years later at a valuation of $12,200. The investor ...

One year after Trump assassination attempt

WASHINGTON — In many ways, the assassination attempt against Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign stop was a perfect storm of failings coming together that allowed 20-year-old Michael Thomas Crooks to climb on top of a nearby building and take eight shots at the once and future president. One attendee was killed, two others wounded and a bullet grazed Trump’s ear before a Secret Service counter sniper opened fire on Crooks and killed him. That day jolted an already chaotic race for the White House and solidified Trump’s iconic status in his party and beyond. It also became a ...
