Take the high road

We’ve all been there. Whether blinded by the high beams of a tailgating vehicle or unexpectedly cut off by another, the unexpected maneuvers that occur on short jaunts to the grocery or long drives to the beach are enough to provoke even the most even-tempered among us to raise a shaking fist in frustration. But road rage incidents appear to have accelerated beyond the occasional rude gesture or honk of a horn. Last week, a South Strabane Township driver was jailed after he was accused of assaulting a woman who apparently had been following him with her vehicle’s high beams on. ...

Thank you to Carlisle High School To the Editor: It seems we are increasingly living in a country where news stories frequently result in half the people cheering and the other half becoming angry. Dividing into us-versus-them has become too easy these days. We can do better. I recently witnessed us doing better. On the afternoon of April 14 of this year, the Carlisle Track and Field team modeled humanity’s best side. Addy Ross, a rising star for the Mifflin County track team, died as a result of a car accident on Feb. 4 of this year. Her life was remembered and honored by her ...

Jesus died for the sins of man To the Editor: When Adam fell mankind (male and female) became enemies of God (Rom.5:10, 8:7). Sinners at birth (Ps.51:5, 58:3). None are righteous (Rom.3:10), none seek after God (Rom.3:11), all have sinned (Rom3:23), and are under the curse of the law (Duet.27:26; Gal.3:10). The word of God additionally teaches : “ the soul the sinneth, it shall die” Ezek.18:20), “vengeance on them that know not God” (2Thes.1:18), and punishment consisting of “everlasting destruction from the prescence of the LORD” (2Thes.1:9). So, this is the fate of man ...

Inflation will be factor in election

Eye-opening at the top of the Wall Street Journal’s April 11-12 edition was the headline “Inflation hits two-year high.” Reporting that consumer prices jumped 3.3% in March from a year earlier, the largest increase in two years, the Journal said the April 10 inflation report from the U.S. Labor Department “was in line with the expectations of economists surveyed” by the newspaper “but the March reading was much hotter than February’s gain of 2.4%” The Journal continued: “The report is the first to capture the impact of the Iran war on inflation.” The Journal ...

911 dispatchers are unseen first responders

When the worst happens, we rely on the people who answer the call to be there. We need the police to stand between us and violence. We need firefighters to walk into flames. We need paramedics and emergency medical technicians to stop the bleeding. But while those are the first responders we see, we cannot forget the ones who actually answer the call. A bill before the Pennsylvania Senate would recognize that reality. House Bill 453 would reclassify 911 dispatchers as first responders. Why does that matter? Is putting dispatchers in a particular occupational box that important? It ...

Railroad merger could increase costs for farmers, consumers To the Editor: The proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern would combine two of the nation’s largest railroads, a move that could lead to higher rates for our cherished farmers. Freight rail is like any other market. When fewer companies are in control, customers lose leverage. Pennsylvania farmers already have limited options when it comes to moving crops and goods through freight rail, so a gigantic consolidation like the one that’s on the table could mean even fewer choices and therefore higher ...
