Girls soccer: Little Lions claw Huskies, 8-0

STATE COLLEGE — After a weekend of finishing with a tie against Central Mountain and a nail-biting 1-0 loss to a very tough Danville team, the Mifflin County girls soccer team started their week against State College.
It was a renewing of a rivalry as the veteran Little Lions hosted a young Lady Huskies squad ready to punch its first victory of the season.
On a scorching Tuesday evening, the Little Lions would take the contest 8-0.
Mifflin County goalie Taryn Hubler finished the night with nine saves.
But Mifflin County battled to the end.
"I think we only have two seniors, and, um, you know, I mean, a couple of juniors, as well. So we’re a really young team, so we knew there was gonna be some building time involved with this early in the season," said Mifflin County coach Barrett Knepp. "State College is pretty, pretty formidable opponent, so we’ll build on this, and hopefully come back stronger to the next game.”
Picking up the hat trick for State College's was Ayda Bailey.
After 10 minutes of tough defensive play by both teams State College's Bailey got open on the left side and sent a shot to the opposite corner of the goal, making it a 1-0 contest at 30:38.
Minutes later Bailey had another run at the goal but it was snagged by the Huskies goalie Taryn Hubler.
Butterworth the next time down the field, Bailey broke loose and sent it to the back of the net, upping the Little Lions lead to 2-0.
Mifflin County's Madison Peachey put some pressure on State College's goalie Kali Hazel. But each time Hazel had her number stopping the ball dead in its tracks.
With the clock dwindling under the 15-minute mark, State College struck again. This time it would be Natalia Andrews would put on in, upping things to a 3-0 advantage at the 14:59 mark.
The Huskies were able to close up the running lanes as refused to let another goal the rest of the first half.
Hubler finished with six saves in the first half.
State College led in shots on goal at the intermission by a 9-3 margin.
Coming out of the half, State College struck first. Leah Sampsel caught a pass from Bailey, 38:44 to make it a 4-0 contest.
Minutes later the Little Lions scored again. Stuck in traffic in the middle of the box Taylor Langer blasted a shot for her team's fifth goal at 33:31.
Sampsel scored again late at 9:05 to end the game scoring.
Mifflin County hosts East Juniata Thursday at home.
