MIFFLINBURG -- The American Camp Association (ACA) has announced that Camp Mount Luther has received ACA Accredited Camp Status following their site visit this summer. The Keystone Regional Local Council of Leaders of ACA voted to re-accredit the camp last fall.
"ACA accreditation means that Camp Mount Luther submitted to a thorough review of its operation from staff qualifications and training to emergency management -- and complied with the highest standards in the industry," said Nancy Hartmann, ACA National Standards Commission.
"Parents expect their children to attend accredited schools. They also deserve a camp experience that is reviewed and accredited by an expert, independent organization," Hartmann said.
Every three years, a team of trained camp professionals visit camps on behalf of ACA to observe the camp while in session and compare its practices with the highest standards of camping in America. Camp Mount Luther has been accredited by ACA since 1989. Accreditation is important because that status shows that Mount Luther is committed to provide programs and facilities that are safe for those campers who come to the camp. Mount Luther was visited by ACA in July.
"ACA Accreditation is very important to our camp," Chad Hershberger, Mount Luther Executive Director, said. "While the program is strictly voluntary, we owe it to our campers and parents to have the best operation that we possibly can. ACA Accreditation demonstrates our commitment to quality camp programming," he said.
Camp Mount Luther was founded in 1963 and is located near Mifflinburg. The camp runs a summer program and is also available for retreats year-round. The camp, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, serves children and adults in Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Snyder, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Tioga and Union Counties.
ACA is the only independent accrediting organization reviewing camp operations in the country. ACA's nationally recognized standards program focuses primarily on the program quality, health, and safety aspects of a camp's operation. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to assure that current practices at the camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.
