To the editor:
Once again, I find myself compelled to respond to one of Laura Hollis's ridiculous editorials. This one appeared in The Sentinel on Sept. 23 and was titled "The political left in this country is completely insane."
In the editorial Hollis presents several arguments that are factually wrong. The first is that Democrats have never accepted the election results and simply want to undermine "the legitimacy of the 2016 elections." It is a fact that Russia tried to undermine the election in favor of Donald Trump. It is also a fact that the 2016 election was determined by a relative handful of votes in three key swing states. It is a fact that Donald Trump Jr. met with Russians in an effort to get dirt on Hillary Clinton. It is also true that Trump violated campaign finance laws when he paid off a porn actress just prior to the 2016 election to keep it quiet without disclosing it as a campaign finance donation. His lawyer is in jail for arranging that exchange.
It is also a fact that Robert Mueller did not exonerate Trump as to the charge of obstruction of justice. There was sufficient evidence that Trump obstructed justice but since Mueller could not indict a sitting president, it was left to Congress to deal with it. None of these things is the reason that most Democrats are opposed to Donald Trump.
Most Democrats are opposed to Donald Trump because of the things he has said and done since becoming president. They include denying science and climate change, violating the rights of states like California to set their own emission standards, inferring that most Latino immigrants are rapists and murderers, stating that there were good people among the white supremacists that marched in Charlottesville, telling numerous lies every day, alienating our historical allies while cozying up to world dictators and appointing people that aren't qualified to Cabinet positions.
The fact that he did not put his businesses in a blind trust is also a huge conflict of interest. He profits every time a foreign dignitary, domestic company executive or a government employee stays at his hotels and resorts. His Secret Service detail and entourage must stay there at our expense every time he does. That happens while he is golfing nearly every weekend despite the fact that he said he "wouldn't have time for golf" if he were elected.
No, Laura Hollis, it's not the fact that he "tans and tweets too much" and it's not that we want to undermine "the legitimacy of the 2016 election results." His own words and actions since he was elected are more than enough to justify his defeat in 2020.
