To the editor:
I enthusiastically support Marc Friedenberg's candidacy for Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District. I also support his priorities: jobs, health care, education and our environment.
The relentless rise of carbon dioxide after the Industrial Revolution closely matches the burning of fossil fuels, leaving no doubt that human activity has (and is) changing our atmosphere. Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide are greater than at any time during the last 400,000 years.
Carbon dioxide has a warming effect and the scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal. Since 2001, 17 of the past 18 years have been the warmest on record. Moreover, Earth's six warmest years on record occurred since 2010.
Snow and ice have diminished; sea levels have risen. The number of heavy-precipitation events has increased in a number of regions and the potential impacts on human and natural systems are daunting.
And yet, Tom Marino, who has received money from the fossil-fuel industry, has:
¯ Voted yes to barring the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.
¯ Signed the Contract From America which incorrectly claimed that capping the emission of greenhouse gases has no effect on global temperatures.
¯ Signed the No Climate Tax Pledge: "I pledge to the taxpayers of my state, and to the American people, that I will oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue."
Prudently addressing climate change is an investment in our environment and future generations. We need visionary leadership in Congress. That's why I support Marc Friedenberg.
