Driver escapes injury after tractor-trailer fire on Route 322

MIFFLINTOWN -- The Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1 and other first responders battled a tractor-trailer fire on Route 322 West, east of the Port Royal exit, on Friday night, according to the Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1 officials.

Fire officials said the tractor was fully engulfed, with the trailer starting to go and a small fire in the nearby woods. The driver escaped unharmed and the trailer was loaded with eggs.

Other responding agencies included the Friendship Fire Co. 1 of Port Royal, Port Royal EMS, Thompsontown Volunteer Fire Co. No. 8 and Thompsontown EMS, Delaware Township Fire and Rescue No. 6 and Beale Township Fire Co. No. 5.

The first post on social media by the Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1 was made around 9 p.m., stating Route 322 West was closed and for drivers to avoid the area. Subsequent posts said fire officials were on scene for about eight hours, watching for hot spots, while clean-up crews unloaded the trailer and cleared the roadway. Pennsylvania State Police troopers, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers, Keller's Towing and Eagle Towing also assisted at the scene.
