Early morning blaze claims barn

MIFFLINTOWN -- Juniata County fire companies responded to a barn fire on Free Spring Church Road that started about 1:30 a.m.
Fire officials said once hay inside the barn caught fire, it quickly spread throughout the structure.
"We were glad we were able to save the house, the big pig barn that was nearby and another small structure close to the fire," said Delaware Township Fire Chief Steven Roush.
Crews were able to extinguish the blaze after approximately five to six hours, however, the damage had been done, leaving nothing but the base of the barn.
Despite serious damage to the barn, there was no injury to people or animals. Only three steer were in the barn at the time of the fire and they were rescued before injury could occur.
"With barn fires, the cause is hard to determine," said Roush, adding that the official cause is under investigation.
Responders included Delaware Township Fire Company, Fayette Fire Company, Mifflintown Hose Company, Thompsontown Fire Company, Richfield Fire Company, Friendship Fire Company, four tankers from Perry County, two tankers from Mifflin County, two tankers from Snyder County, EMS from Fayette Township and Thompsontown, and an air unit from Mifflin County.
