LEWISTOWN -- The fifth annual Mifflin County Science and Technology Fair is set for April 14 at its new location, the Body and Soul Community Center near Strodes Mills.
The event is designed around a science fair competition for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, awarding $300 for first place and pays out first through fifth places in two divisions. This public event, done with the assistance of many locally related sponsors, allows for family and friends as well as the general public to come in and view the projects and have them explained by the youth competitors. The public is welcome to view the projects from noon to 2 p.m.
In addition to the projects on display, there will be several other science and technology related presenters that includes the "Bug Man," who has a huge display of live and deceased bugs that can be handled, South Hills School of Business and Technology, Geisinger and others. The event is concluded by launching rockets that the youth competition participants built while waiting to present their project to the judges.
"This event is ideally one that can help introduce the youth and adults of the area to new STEM related enrichments or further their already inquisitive minds in a positive academic environment," said Brett Rogers, coordinator of the fair. "My main objective is getting the public to come out to attend the event so the participants get as much appreciation as possible for their efforts."
The registration deadline for the fair is Wednesday, but late entries will be accepted until all slots are filled.
