PennDOT installs mountain cameras

Additions will allow public to monitor road conditions 24/7

MILROY — If you have been driving over Seven Mountains recently you’ve undoubtedly noticed Phase II of the Potters Mills Gap project is well under way, what may have escaped your gaze however are the traffic cameras being installed.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there will be two cameras located on the eastbound side of U.S. 322, one near the top of the mountain and one near the runaway truck ramp.

There will also be two cameras on the westbound side of U.S. 322, one above Filter Plant Road, just beyond the curve warning flashing sign and one located halfway up the mountain. Lastly, there will be a camera located at the Belleville Reedsville interchange of U.S. 322 and state Route 655.

The public will be able to view the images from the cameras through 511PA, PennDOT’s travel advisory website.

In addition to the cameras, a Dynmaic Message Sign will be installed along U.S. 322 in the westbound lane, prior to the Belleville/Reedsville exit and will include a speed feedback detection device. A Highway Advisory Radio transmitter will also be constructed near that interchange.

Devices implemented on this project will be utilized for the management of construction-related and weather-related incidents. The devices will assist PennDOT in distributing preemptive and current information to the travelling public in conjunction with 511PA, according to the release.

Dixon Electric, Inc. from Claysburg, is the prime contractor. The project is expected to be completed by Jan. 29, 2018 and costs $1.2 million.
