ARIES (March 21-April 19). Your actions are an extension of where you’re at in a given time. Your victories, your mistakes — these are parts of your story, but don’t confuse them for the totality of you. None of this completely defines you. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You keep hearing the same advice, but it never actually moves you or changes anything. The advice is off, not you. Seek a new angle or challenge the usual narrative. Shake up the way you think, the words you use, or the stories you tell yourself. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You spend your days being responsible, so of ...

When marriage changes everything

Dear Annie: My younger sister “Natalie” got married this spring to a man none of us really know. They met online, and within six months, they were engaged. My parents were uneasy about how fast it all happened, but Natalie was sure. She said she’d never felt so connected to anyone. Since the wedding, though, she’s been pulling away from the family. She used to call me almost every day, and now it’s maybe once a week. She skipped our mom’s birthday dinner last month and didn’t seem that apologetic about it. When I ask how she’s doing, she just says she’s “busy” and ...

Advanced COPD calls for immediate treatment

DEAR DR. ROACH: After over 50 years of smoking, my wife has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bad scarring of her lungs, but fortunately she doesn’t have cancer. She had respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and no longer has nicotine cravings, but we aren’t sure if it was RSV that killed her cravings. She lies in bed day and night and only gets up to go to the bathroom. She walks 30 feet to the bathroom and gets out of breath. Her vitals are good for an ex-smoker, but oxygen therapy wasn’t improving her oxygen level, which is 92%. Is there anything she can do to ...

Reader writes in with two hints on reminders

Dear Heloise: Hey there. I wanted to write in with two hints from a boy in Illinois. My mother lives alone, and I’ve asked her to turn on the front porch light when she goes to bed, then turn it off when she gets up. I’ve asked the neighbors to check on her light. If it’s still on around 11 a.m., I ask them to please call her and check in on her. The second thought is: When I make the grocery list, I memorize it and leave it in the car. It’s great practice for the brain. Last time I did this, I only forgot two items. –– Keith Filges, via email Dear Heloise: I have a ...

Horoscope

ARIES (March 21-April 19). The dance you do when you wonder if something is good enough to share? That’s self-curation. It’s protective (because you’ve learned certain people can be unpredictable), but it’s also a craft in itself. It forces you to polish your work. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Money is just math until you touch it. Then it becomes emotion. Today you’ll notice the feeling more than the number. Whether what comes up is envy, pride, relief, fear or other, follow the sensation and you’ll learn what you really value. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Momentum works the ...
