HARRISBURG -- Gov. Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation have announced $250 million in funding for 79 road projects across 44 counties as part of an effort to speed up road repairs statewide.
The projects will cover more than 400 miles of paving and other improvements. The funding is part of a larger plan to distribute $775 million from the Motor License Fund over the next 18 months for accelerated repairs to state-owned roads.
PennDOT said the additional funding will allow some projects to begin ahead of schedule, reduce maintenance costs and free up crews and equipment for other transportation needs.
"This year's state budget will help Pennsylvanians see more miles paved faster than originally scheduled," Shapiro said.
Work has already begun on several projects, including Route 77 in Crawford County, U.S. 40 in Fayette County and Route 378 in Bethlehem.
The new projects add to PennDOT’s broader transportation program. The administration said more than 21,800 miles of roadway have been improved statewide since Shapiro took office, along with work advancing on nearly 2,000 state and local bridges.
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said the additional investment will help maintenance crews focus on preserving roads and bridges throughout the state.
