Cheery greetings from southern Ohio this morning. The sun is shining through the clouds at times. The weather seems unsettled; we had a thunder shower last night with 1.2 inches of rain. Gertie and Lena were outside mowing the yard this morning before it rains again.
There were people in the area over Sunday, but I didn’t see any of them. I also heard that Mrs. Anna Salina Kanagy and daughter and others from Virginia were here too. The others were from Big Valley and Tyrone, PA.
North church was at Norman and Lomie Peachey, and west church was at Daniel and Martha Peachey.
This is already Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. The day I usually go to my cousin’s house. They were looking forward to going to Pa with John and Julia Swarey this week. Not sure if they will go or not because of people having the measles in Big Valley, Pa. One might wonder where it comes from. It’s been 38 years since black measles were in the valley. Quite a few people were very sick and needed hospital care. Reedy Yoder, Annie, and the baby died from it. It’s very important that once you have them to be in a room with shades pulled, as it can hurt the eyes being in bright sunlight and/or wear sunglasses too. I wish everyone better days ahead.
Well, the school board still needed two teachers for Little Scioto School. (West board) They had been to too many places out here. Now, last Monday their chairman, Elmer A. Peachey, was here at Gideons; they wanted a few days to think about it. He came back on Thursday for an answer. Lena, 21, will be the new teacher; L.W. Bertha Wengerd plans to teach where Rachel Peachey was teaching at Pine Grove.
The other schools have their teachers continue from last year, with Lena Swarey at Sunrise Meadows, Mary Swarey at Glade View, and Mary Peachey at Ridge View School.
Sister Mrs. Gideon Annie Peachey had trouble with her left eye. The other Wednesday, it changed for the worse as it got dark at the corner, and she saw streaks of lightning in that eye. She went to the eye doctor that day; he wanted her to go to an eye specialist ASAP, which was the next day. Her retina had a tear, and they didn’t want it to tear all the way through because she could’ve lost her eyesight in that eye. She had to go back on the 4th to have it filled. They called it a spot weld, so hopefully it will not happen again.
We were having wet and rainy weather this week, and very windy too. It seems like hurricane weather is very unsettled as of this morning.
The Martins have fled to their southern home, so the summer days are flying by so fast. The Amish schools will start on the first Monday after Lalon Day. Which will be the 14th of September, but the PA schools start the 24th of August already!
Time to move on till next week!
