LEWISTOWN -- As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, students in Mifflin and Juniata counties have a new reason to take part in the festivities -- and a chance to earn $10,000 toward their college education.
America250PA, the state commission leading Pennsylvania's commemoration of the Semiquincentennial, has launched a scholarship program awarding $250,000 to high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college or university in the 2026-2027 academic year. The initiative honors the Commonwealth's legacy of educational opportunity while investing in its future leaders.
Twenty-five scholarships of $10,000 each will be distributed across six regions of Pennsylvania, ensuring that students from rural communities like the Juniata Valley are well represented. Up to 12 awards will support students attending community colleges, while the remaining 13 will go to those enrolling in four-year or other accredited post-secondary institutions.
Applications must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2026. Students will be evaluated on academic achievement, community involvement, and their vision for contributing to Pennsylvania's future. Participating colleges may also choose to match the scholarship funds, potentially doubling the award for recipients.
Local educators say the program could be a game-changer for students in Mifflin and Juniata counties, where many families face financial barriers to higher education.
The scholarship is part of a broader statewide effort to mark America's 250th anniversary with programs that blend history, civic pride and public engagement. America250PA is encouraging communities to get involved through educational initiatives, volunteer opportunities and local events leading up to July 4, 2026.
For students in the Juniata Valley, the scholarship offers more than financial support -- it's a reminder that their voices and dreams matter in shaping the next chapter of the American story. With the application window approaching, families are encouraged to begin preparing now.
As Pennsylvania looks ahead to 2026, the Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program stands as a powerful symbol: the future of the Commonwealth will be written by students from every corner -- including right here in Mifflin and Juniata counties.
