What your favorite a.m. drink reveals about you

By Michael Dinich 3 min read

Your entire lifestyle can likely be summed up by what you drink in the morning, according to a new study.

In a poll of 2,000 American adults, split between 1,000 coffee drinkers and 1,000 matcha drinkers, a number of personality and lifestyle differences -- and a few surprising similarities -- were observed based on their preferred a.m. beverage.

The survey found that if you're a matcha drinker, you're more likely to wake up early, prefer outdoor activities, be an ambivert, or have a balance of introvert and extrovert tendencies, and describe yourself as "adventurous" compared to your coffee-drinking counterparts.

Coffee has long been the beloved beverage of the morning, but in recent years, a different drink has found its way into consumers' hands each morning. Matcha, which hails from China originally and eventually Japan in its modern form, is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. The drink has taken social media by storm in recent years, according to World Tea News, as fitness and wellness influencers turned to the drink for their morning dose of caffeine instead of the traditional cup of coffee.

In the study commissioned by Califia Farms and conducted by OnePoll, it was found by comparison, that there are a number of differences between coffee drinkers and those who have embraced matcha in the mornings.

In fact, more than half of morning coffee drinkers prefer to sleep in later, prefer indoor activities like watching movies, and are more likely to be an introvert.

Four in five (81%) from both groups exercise on a regular basis -- though matcha drinkers tend to work out more frequently than the coffee-drinking group (four times per week, compared to three).

Of those who exercise regularly, early-rising matcha drinkers were most likely to break a sweat in the morning hours vs. in the afternoon or evening. Coffee drinkers, on the other hand, prefer to wait until the afternoon.

Were these trends written in the stars? When it comes to astrology, the survey found matcha drinkers are more likely to be fire signs, such as Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, -- or water signs, such as Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Meanwhile, earth signs, like Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, and air signs, like Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini, were more prone to drink coffee.

Despite several differences between matcha and coffee drinkers, both enjoy being their own baristas, with almost three-quarters of coffee drinkers and two-thirds of matcha drinkers preparing their beverages from the comfort of home.

Coffee drinkers were also found to take slightly less time making their cup. It took the average coffee drinker four minutes to make their cup, compared to matcha drinkers who took five minutes.
