Spring brings new geese landings for public art project

LEWISTOWN -- What do Jake from State Farm, the gospel, some delicious corn and a penny have in common?
Absolutely nothing. That's until last week when a flock of new geese landed in Mifflin County as part of the Wild Geese Flock Together public art project.
The goal of this project is to recognize the unique tradition of Goose Day through the talent of local artists, while strengthening community spirit and enhancing tourism.
Jake "The Goose" Neighbor, sponsored by Amanda Moeller's State Farm office, located at 28 E. Third St, Lewistown, was painted by Jessica Miller.
"The statue is meant to remind people of the importance of community involvement and supporting local businesses," Moeller said. "We believe in the power of community and are committed to making a positive difference in people's lives. Jake the Goose is a tribute to the beauty of nature and the importance of working together."
"The Gospel Goose" landed at the New Life Church, 101 N. Beech Street, Burnham. It was painted by Christina Kensinger and Rebecca Conner-Miller.
Pastor John Walters was so happy that the Gospel Goose finally arrived, he has invited everyone to come out and "take a look."
Compass Community Connections' goose called, "Delicious Corn," was painted by Mike Demi. It can be found at 31 S. Dorcas St., Lewistown.
Compass Executive Director Beth Zong said, "Together we're better."
She added that individuals can learn from the geese: they work together by flying in the "V" formation and take turns flying point, and therefore can get to their destination quicker and more efficiently. Those in the back also honk from behind to encourage those upfront to keep up their speed.
"For we humans, as a team, our words should be encouraging when we stand by our core values and encourage others in good times and bad," Zong said.
William Penn Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center's goose, "Penny," was painted by Karl Leitzel and is located at 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown.
Casi Hutchison, CAN, said the William Penn staff worked tirelessly to raise money for their goose. "The staff did many fundraisers such as dress down, bake sale and soup sales," Hutchison said. "We here at William Penn wanted to be a part of the Mifflin County goose family."
Penn State Construction prepared all the landing sites for the geese.
