Most professional athletes don't need much when it comes to gift-giving from old Saint Nick.
Besides, what would Santa have brought millionaire, superstar athletes for Christmas? What if Santa skipped the Dolce and Bentleys this year and gave them something meaningful, like improvements to their game or front offices that make better decisions?
In realty, with their multi-million dollar contracts, spacious mansions and fancy sports cars, many pro athletes could buy their own Santa Claus and staff a factory full of gift-making elves. But what fun would that be because we couldn't razz them.
Here goes: Giving the gift of swagger back to the Philadelphia Eagles. Losses down the stretch - combined with a hobbled, sickly Jalen Hurts - have put the Birds in a dogfight to the finish in not only the NFC East but the NFC.
Presenting the Scrooges at the NCAA with a moratorium for the Transfer Portal and hiring coaches to fill vacancies.
I'm not going to get into the selections for this year's College Football Playoff. I've heard enough about that. I'm talking about players skipping bowl games because they can't wait to pack their bags and get out of dodge, or schools plucking coaches from other schools to fill their vacancies when these coaches should be preparing their original teams for bowl games.
I know in this age of five-star recruiting that every second counts, but it would have been nice to see Manny Diaz coach the Nittany Lions' defense one more time. Honestly, I wish Duke had hired James Franklin instead.
Alas, these players take the field all season for their fans then bowl games hit and the top players skip out. I don't get. It makes Bowl Season meaningless to a degree. Couldn't all this wait until after the championship game?
Hopefully, the brass of the Philadelphia 76ers found a gameplan. It feels like if their last name isn't Embiid or Maxey, most players on their roster don't fit into the puzzle. No matter how successful the Sixers, one of them is likely going to get hurt and the season will end with another disappointing playoff run.
Their roommates, the Flyers, have certainly improved their on-ice product without breaking the bank on megastars. Hopefully, Santa brought them some more solid play that eventually translates into a playoff berth.
For Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, here's hoping Santa had something in his gift bag that will keep his streak of winning campaigns alive.
For all NFL teams, Santa left you some wisdom to stop hiring, or recycling, these head coaches over and over again. Josh McDaniels' name seems to pop up for vacancies. Teams don't get the fact coordinators don't always make good head coaches. Maybe some common sense would do the trick.
The same is true for teams that dish out these multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts. A few years ago, the New York Islanders gave a goalie a ridiculous 13-year contract. Who has that longevity? Athletes have one good season and they're treated like a GOAT and paid for their potential. That's one reason many college players are busts at the next level.
The Phillies and Pirates are spared due to their fiscal spending. Although it certainly must have been a Merry Christmas at the Nola house.
