It’s Salute to the Military Night at Port Royal this evening. Military members, past or present, need to present proof of service at general admission ticket lines to be admitted free of charge. The night is the final tuneup before next week’s 10th annual Living Legends Dream Race.
Three 358/360 sprint car tracks are in the middle of their weekend of money series. Williams Grove Speedway kicked off action last night with a $4,000 to win program. Tonight, Selinsgrove Speedway pays the 360 sprint winner $10,000 in its annual National Open. Utica-Rome-New York Speedway has a $10,000 dollar to win program tomorrow night. Look for Greg Hodnett to compete in these special shows.
Pocono International Raceway hosts NASCAR Sprint Cup racing Sunday. Usually that means we will have rain in our region as it just seems Pocono can’t seem to catch a break. Jeff Gordon adds a special dimension to the program, subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Here’s a reminder, Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell will both appear at the Aug. 18 Grandview Speedway All Star Circuit of Champions race program. It is Kinser’s only scheduled appearance in Pennsylvania this season.
Congratulations to Stevie Smith on capturing his first win of the season driving the Fred Rahmer racer. Smith won last Tuesday night’s Grandview event.
The PA Sports Network and Ye Olde Hotel Milroy present their edition of “Need for Speed” race car show Aug. 13 in the restaurant parking lot. Area race cars and drivers will be on hand signing autographs. The program is open to all ages.
Christopher Bell piloted a Tony Stewart-owned sprint car to victory at Kokomo, Ind., Speedway this week. Bell will also pilot the car at this year’s Knoxville Nationals.
Rico Abreu will compete in this year’s Knoxville Nationals. The NASCAR truck racer also won at Kokomo in a sprint car race this week, which makes him a guaranteed starter for the Dirt Classic race at Lincoln Speedway. The Kokomo win was worth $12,500.
Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen are improving on the World of Outlaws sprint car circuit. Schuchart has won two events recently. Allen scored a fine third-place finish. The pair are the grandson and nephew of Hall of fame driver Bobby Allen from Hanover.
There are 40 entries for 40 starting spots in tomorrow’s Pocono race. Clint Bowyers car will be carrying an ad on the hood and sides promoting the Knoxville, Iowa Sprint Car Nationals – never did I think we would see something like this.
Pocono began operation in 1969. The first Cup race was held in 1974 and won by Richard Petty. Tomorrow’s race is being telecast on NBC Sportsnet at 1:30 pm.
Target Stores announced they will end their 28-year involvement in Indy Car racing at season’s end. The company will continue to sponsor Kyle Larson in NASCAR events.
How big was Jeff Gordon’s return to NASCAR action last week? TV got a nice bump in ratings. The broadcast hit a 3.1 Nielsen rating with 5.3 million viewers. That’s a double-digit increase over most events this season.
When the Knoxville Sprint Car Nationals take place in just two weeks, NASCAR is not scheduled to race. Drivers Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and Rico Abreu have all filed entries for the sprint car nationals. It should be fun to watch the trio compete.
