Weather will be a factor in this weekend’s racing. With forecasts for cold temperatures and snow area speedways were already calling off action as this column was prepared.
Port Royal Speedway and Beaver Springs Dragway will not operate this weekend. Port Royal cancelled the weekend program Thursday night. Beaver Bob McCardle made his announcement Friday.
Before long, nearly every scheduled race program in the midstate was off.
Williams Grove pulled the plug on Friday’s card, as did Bedford Speedway, which planned to open the season last night. The track is celebrating its 80th season of operation.
Selinsgrove’s opener was pushed backa week. A note of interest, track management there lowered the price of student admission to $7 this season.
Lincoln Speedway’s Saturday show was cancelled, as was Hesston’s Sunday racing. Freddie Rahmer won the 410 sprint car feature at Lincoln last week end in what became a bizarre event. The top three cars dropped out on the same lap.
In fact, the only track still hoping to get a race in this weekend is Susquehanna, which called off Saturday’s card but is planning to run Sunday.
Let’s hope NASCAR fares better than our region for weather this weekend. The Duck Commander 500 is scheduled for tonight from Texas Motor Speedway.
Would you believe two drivers have led more than half the Sprint Cup laps logged this season? Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick are those drivers. Busch led 486 to Harvick’s 485 so far.
Cable network CMT has announced a three-night special will be aired on NASCAR racing. “NASCAR, The Rise of American Speed,” will air over three nights across two weeks, on May 8, 15 and 22. The program will tell the story about how a generation of southern bootleggers and gangsters pursued their version of the American dream and created an industry that defined them.
Bobby Allen and Pennsylvania race fans were smiling after last Friday’s World of Outlaws action at Ocean Speedway in California. Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen finished second and third in A-Main action. It was the first time Allen’s cracked the top five in Outlaw competition and the first time the pair both both finished in the top five in an Outlaw event. The Shark Racing team banked $8,700 for their efforts. That should go a long way towards helping the team on its California Outlaw journey
