Weather permitting, local racing continues this weekend in Central PA. Selinsgrove Speedway is scheduled to open a new era today. The new Selinsgrove Speedway promotional team includes Alan Kreitzer, Steve Inch and Michael Heffner. Inch is expected to be the day-to-day point man at the Snyder County oval.
Big Block modifieds headline today’s Race of Champions program which is set to start at 2 p.m. Pit gates open at 11 am. General admission gates open at noon. Tomorrow is available as a rain date if needed.
What will today’s Race of Champions program consist of at Selinsgrove Speedway? A full card of qualifying action that concludes with a 40-lap A Main feature worth $4,000 to the winner. Brett Hearn, the top modified driver in the nation, is expected to compete.
Port Royal Speedway will attempt to operate for the second time this season. The 410 sprint cars and super late models are scheduled with race time at 6 p.m.
The Lincoln Speedway continues to find success completing their programs. They move to night action this evening for the first time this year. The 410 sprint cars and 358 late models make up tonights show. Lincoln reserved tomorrow as a rain date if needed.
In the world of NASCAR the Sprint Cup cars compete tomorrow at Fontana, CA. Fox presents tv coverage starting at 3:30 pm. Brad Keselowski is the defending race champion.
Last weeks Port Royal Speedway action was fast and intense. Greg Hodnett survived other drivers’ misfortune to claim opening night honors. Hodnett has won two of four PA feature events he’s entered this season. It appeared Lucas Wolfe had the field covered until wheel or rear end problems caused the left rear tire assembly to come off the race car. Wolfe was not injured in the mishap. High speeds had a number of drivers on edge. A scary moment took place on lap 10 when three drivers were involved in a scary crash exiting turn four. Brent Marks, Mike Erdley and Doug Esh exited turn four with Marks and Erdley were battling for fifth position. It appeared Erdley and Marks had cleared one another but it wasn’t the case. After flipping, Erdleys car hit the outside fence rupturing the fuel cell and an intense fire broke out. Erdley was some what dazed but aware he was becoming hot in a hurry. Doug Esh ran into the alcohol fire which erupted and pulled Erdley from the blaze. Esh new firesuit was scorched in the process. To the credit of all, good safety equipment was worn and held up doing its job. No injuries were reported. It was scary to watch and could of been much much worse. Hats off to the fire and safety crews who did a good job responding quickly. Erdley later mentioned his concern with high speeds and safety. Many share those concerns.
Andy Haus opened super late model action defeating traveling star Greg Satterlee for the win.
Next week the traveling UFO late model series visit the Juniata County oval.
World of Outlaws driver David Gravel is off to his best start with the travelers. Gravel won the A Main at Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare, CA. Gravel started his traveling career with the All Stars several years ago. I wish him well.
