CANTON, N.Y. – The Penn State women's hockey team scored three goals in the third period to secure a gritty 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Junior alternate captain Abby Stonehouse led the Nittany Lions with two goals, including the game-winner. First-years Kylie Amelkovich and Sofia Ismael assisted on her opening goal. Stonehouse added her second goal of the evening on the power play, with Ismael and sophomore Sophie Morrow picking up the assists. Junior captain Grace Outwater capped Penn State’s scoring with a power-play goal assisted by sophomore Mikah Keller and first-year Megan Hosman.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Penn State earned a power-play opportunity midway through the opening period but was unable to capitalize.

The Nittany Lions appeared to strike first following a video review that determined the puck had crossed the goal line. However, the Saints challenged the play for goaltender interference, prompting a second review that ultimately overturned the goal.

Just 10 seconds later, St. Lawrence opened the scoring as Mae Severn capitalized on one of several rebounds following an initial shot from Rylan Haslam.

Penn State held a 14-11 advantage in shots on goal through the first period.

Both teams traded several quality scoring opportunities in the middle frame. Junior McKenna Walsh nearly tucked the puck home on a breakaway, while Stonehouse generated another scoring chance. Outwater added two opportunities of her own, including a shot that rang off the post.

At the other end, first-year goaltender Morgan Stickney stood tall between the pipes, making six saves, including two key stops to keep the Nittany Lions within one.

Penn State continued to hold the edge in shots, outshooting St. Lawrence 10-6 in the second period.

The Saints applied pressure early in the third period, but Stickney held firm to keep the deficit at one.

Outwater nearly found the equalizer on a point-blank opportunity six minutes into the frame, followed by a one-timer from Hosman near the midway point. However, St. Lawrence goaltender Kassidy Lawrence held strong to preserve the Saints’ lead.

However, just 30 seconds after Hosman’s attempt, Stonehouse redirected a shot from Amelkovich into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.

Penn State then earned a five-minute major power play opportunity after St. Lawrence’s Alex Thieren was assessed a penalty for hitting from behind.

Just three minutes after her first goal, Stonehouse capitalized on the man advantage, firing a one-timer from the left circle into the net to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the evening, 2-1.

Outwater added an insurance goal on the same power play, firing a shot from the slot off a feed from Keller to secure the 3-1 comeback victory for Penn State.
