UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Trey Cehajic went a season-long six innings and Vincent Spizzoucco followed with three strong innings, but despite not allowing an earned run, the State College Spikes fell to the Trenton Thunder, 3-0, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Cehajic (2-2), who went 5 2/3 innings to set a new high-water mark for any Spikes (18-17 2nd Half) pitcher in his last start on August 13 in West Virginia, followed it by allowing two unearned runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The Tulane right-hander also struck out six batters.
Spizzoucco gave up just one hit to Bryson Trammell in the ninth, with Trammell then moving to second on a groundout and scoring with a steal of third base and a subsequent left-hander. The Pitt left-hander recorded one strikeout in the outing.
Trenton (17-17 2nd Half) scored both of its first-inning runs on Mike Whooley's two-out single, then rode starter Billy Morris (5-2) to victory. Morris logged eight innings for his second-longest outing of the season, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out three batters.
The Spikes threatened in the ninth against Trenton closer Joe Colucci (3), with a pinch-hit single from Ryan Rivera and a single from Nyan Hayes to start the inning. However, Colucci retired the next three batters to pick up the save.
